Many near, to mid-term satellite missions have been identified for 200 kg class spacecraft. For many of these applications, significant delta-v capability is desired in order to perform orbit transfer, on-orbit repositioning and formation flying. Several of these systems are in advanced engineering development and could be ready to support flight opportunities as early as summer 2004. A 200 W Hall Effect Thruster (RET) system is being developed to satisfy traditional high specific impulse (Isp) missions such as stationkeeping and orbit transfer, and has demonstrated Isp of 1,370 sec, thrust of 12.2 mN and 35% total efficiency. This system, however, has also demonstrated the ability to produce very small impulse bits, as low as 1.5 mN-sec, for formations flying applications that require precise maneuvers. To complement this system, a suite of miniaturized sensors is also in development that will enable a full description of the integration impacts of METs on Department of Defense (DoD), National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA), and commercial satellites. This instrumentation package consists of a xenon ion energy analyzer, electron (Langmuir) probes, radiometric and photometric sensors, and a solar array experiment. The combined package, including the instruments, electronics, harness, chassis, etc., is less than 2 kg total mass - representing a significant improvement in capability vs. mass and cost. The third system in advanced development is a micro pulsed plasma thruster (MPPT) for applications in propulsive attitude control, which can reduce a l50-kg class microsatellite's attitude control system mass by 90%. This thruster, based on traditional pulsed plasma thrusters, weighs approximately 1.5 kg, and has three orthogonal thrust axes, each of which can be fired to produce impulse about any spacecraft axis. MPPT performance is now being optimized, but is expected to be from 25-100 microN, with an estimated Isp of 500-800 sec.

Microsatellites have been suggested as a means of enhancing a variety of proposed space missions, ranging from low-Earth-orbit to solar-system exploration. With improvements in propulsion technology geared toward microsatellites, the ultimate delta-V (deltaV) capabilities of some microsatellite systems are now in the range of several km/s, opening the doors to a variety of high deltaV, fast response scenarios. This paper provides a brief overview of propulsion technologies currently available for microsatellites, and an evaluation of each technology for potential use in a demanding mission. The sample mission is that of a microsatellite inspector which, starting in a 200 km parking orbit, must be diverted to rendezvous with another satellite in orbit at a different altitude and inclination. It is found that existing bipropellant microrocket designs provide a high thrust value, combined with a 300 s specific impulse, allowing for response times of only a few hours for such an inspector mission with deltaV requirements over 1 km/s. Miniaturized electrostatic thrusters provide the largest ultimate deltaV capability, approaching 10 km/s, but with a very low thrust level and therefore a response time capability of several months. Newly developed micro-solar thermal systems fill in the middle ground for these two options, providing the moderate thrust levels and specific impulse values necessary for a response time on the order of one day and a deltaV of several km/s.

A simple family of indirect-transfer trajectories between circular orbits is used to evaluate the mass ratio required to complete round-trip interplanetary missions using low-thrust propulsion systems. These trajectories, although not optimum, yielded very substantial reductions in total round-trip time for Mars missions with moderate increases in initial weight. For a powerplant specific weight [alpha] of 10 pounds per kilowatt of jet power, trip times were reduced from 1200 to 600 days, for a typical manned mission, with an initial weight increase of a factor of two. Comparison with a nuclear rocket with 1000-second specific impulse indicated that the electric-propulsion system required less initial weight for trip times as low as 550 days with [alpha]=10 and as low at 400 days with [alpha]=5 pounds per kilowatt. Further weight reductions would be expected with more nearly optimum trajectories.
