Transition Metal Oxides

Transition Metal Oxides PDF Author: P. A. Cox
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0191030139
Category : Technology & Engineering

Pages : 295

Book Description
Transition metal oxides form a series of compounds with a uniquely wide range of electronic properties. They have important applications as dielectrics, semiconductors, and metals, and as materials for magnetic and optical uses. The recent discovery of `high temperature' superconductors has brought the attention of a wide scientific community to this area and has highlighted the problems involved in trying to understand transition metal oxides. The present book is not primarily about Tc superconductors, although their main properties are discussed in the final sections. The main aim is to describe the varied electronic behaviour shown by transition metal oxides, and to discuss the different types of theoretical model that have been proposed to interpret it. It is intended to provide an introduction to this fascinating and difficult field, at a level suitable for graduate students and other research workers with a background in solid- state chemistry or physics.

Structural Phase Transitions in Layered Transition Metal Compounds

Structural Phase Transitions in Layered Transition Metal Compounds PDF Author: K. Motizuki
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9789027721716
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
The structural phase transition is one of the most fundamental problems in solid state physics. Layered transition-metal dichalcogenides provide us with a most exciting area for the study of structural phase transitions that are associated with the charge density wave (CDW). A large variety of structural phase transitions, such as commensurate and incommensurate transitions, and the physical proper ties related to the formation of a CDW, have been an object of intense study made for many years by methods employing modem microscopic techniques. Rather recently, efforts have been devoted to the theoretical understanding of these experimental results. Thus, McMillan, for example, has developed an elegant phenomenological theory on the basis of the Landau free energy expansion. An extension of McMillan's theory has provided a successful understanding of the successive phase transitions observed in the IT- and 2H-compounds. In addition, a microscopic theory of lattice instability, lattice dynamics, and lattice distortion in the CDW state of the transition-metal dichalcogenides has been developed based on their electronic structures. As a result, the driving force of the CDW formation in the IT- and 2H-compounds has become clear. Furthermore, the effect of lattice fluctuations on the CDW transition and on the anomalous behavior of various physical properties has been made clear microscopically.

Crystal Chemistry and Semiconduction in Transition Metal Binary Compounds

Crystal Chemistry and Semiconduction in Transition Metal Binary Compounds PDF Author: J Suchet
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 408

Book Description
Crystal Chemistry and Semiconduction in Transition Metal Binary Compounds provides information pertinent to semiconductor materials. This book discusses the different semiconduction mechanisms in special compounds, including rare earth compounds or transition metals, vitreous or liquid substances, and organic semiconductors. Organized into three parts encompassing 11 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the basic principles of chemistry, such as the periodic table and the structure of the atom. This text then discusses the substances in which atomic magnetic moment exists, and whose transport properties are not typically metallic. Other chapters examine the experimental work on the electrical conductibility of compounds of transition metals, actinides, or rare earths. This book discusses as well the theoretical concepts necessary for the construction of approximate models to estimate the properties of compounds. The final chapter deals with the modulation of visible or infrared light, which is the only application of magneto- and electro-optical effects. This book is a valuable resource for research scientists, engineers, and teachers.

Electronic Structure and Properties of Transition Metal Compounds

Electronic Structure and Properties of Transition Metal Compounds PDF Author: Isaac B. Bersuker
Publisher: Wiley
ISBN: 9781394178896
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This book covers the theory underlying the electronic structure and properties of transition metal compounds, including physical methods of their investigation. The new edition has been thoroughly updated and incorporates many new developments and methods in the field. The content of the third edition has gone through significant changes with the entire book modified and updated to take into account the developments in the field since the last edition published, as well as based on the readers experience with the use of the book. The most significant changes are due to Chapters 5, 7, and 11. Chapter 5 has been thoroughly rewritten to take into account the fast developing methods of ab initio calculations of electronic structure of coordination compounds. Similarly, chapter 7 includes the latest developments in application of vibronic coupling and the Jahn-Teller and pseudo Jahn-Teller effects to solve coordination chemistry problems. In chapter 11, the more up-to-date views on reactivity, chemical activation, and catalysis are discussed, including the role of the pseudo Jahn-Teller effect. Additionally the questions, exercises, and problems to each chapter of the book have been reviewed and extended, and more problem solving examples are included. Similarly, additional illustrations, graphic presentations, and references have been added.
