Book Description
"1. Start of Season: Break out of the vessels from their winter refuge will be based upon the following: a) Thickness and condition of the ice at three places: (i) the winter refuge, (ii) route to proposed drilling location, (iii) the proposed drilling location. b) How much open water there is at the proposed drilling location and on the route to the location. c) The type of ice to be encountered en route to the proposed drilling location and at the location. d) The number and class of support vessels that are able to assist each unit in its passage through any ice to be encountered. e) The ice and weather predictions/forecasts. f) The experience, local knowledge and limitations of the units operations as decided by the Masters of those units. 2. End of Season: Suspending operations and moving into a harbour of refuge for the winter will be based upon the following: a) Type, thickness and condition of the ice at three places: (i) the location of operations, (ii) the harbour of winter refuge, (iii) the route to the harbour of refuge. b) The ice and weather predictions/forecasts. c) The water column will be monitored and the results will be used to assist predictions and forecasts of ice formation, conditions and weather. d) The number and class of support vessels that are able to assist each unit: (i) at the location, (ii) en route to the harbour of refuge. e) The experience, local knowledge and limitations of the units operations as decided by the Masters of those units. In general, operations will be suspended when: mooring line tensions approach the limits of pre-tension figures, or, ice conditions at the location, en route to the harbour of refuge or at the harbour of refuge make safety of the vessel the criteria. The experience of the Masters of the three drilling vessels and of the four ice class 2 supply vessels that support them has been obtained originally on passage into the Beaufort Sea and then in operations in the Beaufort Sea since the first unit went into the area in 1975. The local experience gained by the masters within [the] Beaufort Sea is considered to be of special importance to help assess present and future operating limits. These limits being both in respect to the local ice conditions and the vessels of the Canmar fleet"--ASTIS database.

Book Description
"This letter report summarizes the results of a cursory investigation to define the approximate deck area required for a drilling/production facility for the Beaufort Sea. The basic result was that three enclosed decks and one exposed top deck, all with approximate dimensions of 150 feet by 150 feet would be required to satisfy the drilling and production criteria as defined by Dome. 1. Scope: Deck space requirements and loadings were determined for the scenario where drilling and production occurred concurrently. The data however are presented in such a way that adjustments can be made for other scenarios such as: a) Commence with drilling only, after which the drilling equipment is removed, production equipment is installed and production commences. b) Drilling and production equipment is installed together but there is no production during the production phase. (Equipment loads would remain constant but live loads would be reduced). Drilling consumables storage was provided for one complete well and two complete wells"--Leaf 1.

Book Description
This conference was convened to review a study plan whose purpose is to provide information for predicting and mitigating effects of potential oil and gas exploration and development in the marine, coastal, and onshore areas of Alaska (the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Chukchi Sea, and Beaufort Sea), and to provide information on the natural and man-made marine and coastal environments that will enable government agencies and private organizations leasing these lands to make sound management decisions in developing these resources. The Chukchi Sea is not mentioned in the draft study plan, but is mentioned in these proceedings.
