Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642841759
Category : Technology & Engineering

Pages : 285

Book Description
Clonal forestry has come of age. Basic techniques in genetics and biotechnology of other organisms are generally applicable to forest trees. However, there are some differences, in particular in the juvenile- and maturation-related regeneration. Examined here are crucial topics of juvenility, maturation and rejuvenation in clonal propagation of trees. In addition, the genetics of clones, population biology of clonal deployment, propagation and field testing of clones, clone identification, clonal physiology, regeneration and variation in plant tissue cultures, the role of somatic embryogenesis in clonal forestry, and recent developments in biotechnology, including the molecular structure of trees and gene transfer are covered in depth.

Vegetative Propagation Of Trees: Principles And Practices

Vegetative Propagation Of Trees: Principles And Practices PDF Author: K. Vanangamudi
Publisher:
ISBN: 9788170893325
Category : Trees
Languages : en
Pages : 175

Book Description
Tree improvement is achieved by clonal selection due to improvements in vegetative propagation techniques. The clonal propagation offers higher genetic gain than that is possible with seed propagation. The clonal technology facilitates rapid selection of outstanding genotypes from the clonal stocks of candidate trees for the exploitation of heterosis. The literature available on vegetative propagation is very extensive and not easily accessible. Hence this book attempts to consolidate the different aspects involved in the vegetative propagation of trees. The importance of vegetative propagation for tree improvement is discussed in the chapter 1. The knowledge of genetic variation of the forest populations is important in determining the efficiency of different selection procedures, therefore the criteria for the selection of superior tree is discussed in the chapter 2. The production of quality seedlings for better survival and growth after transplanting ultimately required better potting media and the chapter 3 gives meticulous information about this aspect. The function and practical application of different plant growth regulators is discussed in chapter 4. Production of large quantities of superior propagules is the great thrust in production forestry and hence the various propagation methods, structures, and hardwares for accelerating the process of production of superior clones is briefly discussed in the chapters 5, 6 and 7. The chapter 8 and 9 gives an account of various pest and diseases affecting the forest trees and their control measures. The successful vegetative propagation methods developed for the economically important trees is dealt in chapter 10. The chapter 11 includes the revolutionary works made through the tissue culture techniques by the induction of genetic variability through somatic hybridisation, induction of mutants, and DNA recombinant technology. Thus this book will serve the need of the students and the researchers studying/working in the field of forestry.

Clonal Forestry II

Clonal Forestry II PDF Author: Mulkh-Raj Ahuja
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642848133
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 249

Book Description
Provided here are both underlying theory and recent results concerning the propagation and use of clones in research and in production forestry. State-of-the-art science and case histories treating production, testing, multiplication and deployment of clones are presented. Agroforestry, urban forestry and christmas-tree farming are covered, along with more traditional multiple-use forestry and high-intensity forestry for biomass, wood and fiber production. Clonal forestry is contrasted to the more recent developments of "family forestry", and the classical tree-improvement approach relying on seed-orchards. The history of clonal forestry is covered with reviews of several centuries experience with Sugi in Japan and poplars in Europe. The impacts and use of clones in the contexts of genetic conservation and biodiversity are discussed, as are the laws and regulations affecting clonal production and deployment.

Rapid Propagation of Fast-growing Woody Species

Rapid Propagation of Fast-growing Woody Species PDF Author: F. W. G. Baker
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN:
Category : Gardening
Languages : en
Pages : 152

Book Description
Plant cell and tissue culture is now an established method which can be used for clonal propagation of plant material. While such propagation may be uneconomic for field crops which can be readily propagated from seed, the prospects for clonal propagation of woody perennials are greater. A number of woody plants have been shown to produce multiple shoots and roots in vitro, and such micropropagation methods also include embryo culture and somatic embryogenesis. These methods are now becoming established alongside more traditional methods of macropropagation. This book reviews our current knowledge of a number of aspects of these methods for rapid and mass propagaion of fast-growing woody species, and is based on a conference organized by the Committee on the Application of Science to Agriculture, Forestry and Aquaculture (CASAFA) of the international Council of Scientific Unions. It will therefore be of interest to research workers in plant biotechnology and forestry.

Micropropagation of Woody Plants

Micropropagation of Woody Plants PDF Author: M.R. Ahuja
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401581169
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 510

Book Description
This volume covers recent advances in the vegetative propagation of woody plants by tissue culture. A wide range of topics relevant to micropropagation of woody plants are discussed by renowned international scientists. These include cellular contro of morphogenesis, light regimes in tissue culture, maturation and rejuvenation, synthetic seed, genetics of micropropagated plants, haploid embryogenesis, protoplast culture, and acclimatization of ex vitro woody plants. In addition to micropropagation of selected woody plants, both gymnosperms and angiosperms, this volume also includes in vitro genetic selection, strategic planning for application of biotechnology for genetics and breeding, and clonal options for woody plant improvement. A balanced view of both perspectives and limitations of woody plant micropropagation is presented.
