Book Description
The primary objective of this project was to provide the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) with the information necessary for finalizing seismic retrofit design of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (SFOBB). Focus was on conducting cyclic tests of half-scale specimens representing latticed members and their connections of the SFOBB. The results of the tests and related analyses were used for refining and modifying the retrofit design of the bridge as well as providing physical results on the actual behavior of existing and retrofitted members. Results showed that the dominant failure mode of the latticed members was the local buckling of the angle legs between the latticed points. In addition, it was found that the failure of connection rivets was the main failure mode of the existing latticed members in specimens with gusset plate connections.
