Promoting Informal Venture Capital PDF Author: Richard T. Harrison

Book Description
The field of entrepreneurial finance and venture capital in general, and informal venture capital or business angel financing in particular, has become a major focus of academic research and policy debate internationally, with strong interest not only in Europe and North America but also in the Pacific Rim and Latin America. Over the past twenty years Richard Harrison and Colin Mason have established an international reputation as leading researchers in the field and have published widely in this area. This new volume collects for the first time in one accessible place the most significant of their work on business angel networks and the development of the informal venture capital market, as well as offers new material from these two pioneers of the field. The ground-breaking research by Colin Mason and Richard Harrison has put ‘business angels’ firmly on the policy agenda internationally and has influenced policy and practice around the globe. There has been increasing recognition in recent years that the informal venture capital market is central to the development of an entrepreneurial economy. The original papers remain remarkably relevant – not only as policy in many countries looks for ways to respond to initiatives to promote business angels, but also as business angels help to ameliorate the deepening finance gap for new and young businesses while banks are constrained in their lending to small businesses. Together with the addition of a new introduction, conclusion, and chapter on coninvestment, networks, and syndicates, this volume represents the greatest synthesis of current knowledge and practice in the promotion of informal venture capital currently available.

Book Description
Small businesses in virtually all industrialized countries find it increasingly difficult to obtain finance from institutional sources. Banks have become more risk-averse; venture capital funds, previously of only marginal significance, are now often concentrating their investments on established companies; and management buyouts and buyins and pressures to reduce government spending have resulted in a reduction in public policy initiatives. In this context there is a growing interest in the role of the informal venture capital market as an alternative source of risk finance for small business. Informal Venture Capital: Investors, Investments and Policy Issues in Finland investigates the phenomenon of `business angels' - wealthy private individuals who invest in small businesses - who are increasingly recognized throughout the developed world as representing the most important source of venture capital for entrepreneurial businesses in their start-up and early growth stages. This volume answers key questions about these investors, and contributes significant new evidence on aspects of the informal venture capital market which have not been examined in previous studies. It further provides an authoritative assessment of the effectiveness of policy initiatives to stimulate the supply of informal venture capital, based on the experiences in Finland.

Book Description
Since the 1980s, the informal venture capital industry has been gaining more attention both in academic and industrial circles. The role of angel investing in economic growth and job creation is now well documented, with more emphasis given in recent years to the effectiveness of increasing the supply and demand for risk capital through entrepreneurship stimulation instruments such as business angel networks. In contrast, this paper looks at the informal venture capital industry from a gestalt perspective, where other stimulus instruments such as incubators, industrial estates and clusters are integrated with business angel networks into a single role to be played by the informal venture capital industry in the context of what is referred to here as capitermediation.

Book Description
What are the financial returns achieved by business angel investors? Which due diligence procedures do they normally undertake prior to their investment decisions? What is their value-add to the start-up companies they invest in? Previous venture capital literature has struggled to find clear answers to these questions - due to lack of relevant public data and difficulty in approaching high-net-worth individuals. By relying on a sample of 136 business angels who carried out 296 investments and realized a total of 133 exits, this study carries out a comprehensive, international comparison of informal investors' characteristics and practices across Italy, Spain and Switzerland. The research investigates the impact of socio-economic factors on business angels' behaviour and financial performance, deriving important implications for investors' associations and policy-makers. A number of recommendations is developed to help governments design effective incentive structures and foster the development of an early-stage financing market in Europe.

Book Description
It was not that long ago that it might have been possible to cover the topic of venture capital in one paper. Now, it is not possible to provide comprehensive coverage in even one book. The industry has flourished, as variations of he initial venture capital funds have been developed and now operates in most developing and developed economies. This is clearly reflected in this volume, which has a strong focus on Europe and Asia. Each of the papers is a stand alone effort. However, a full reading of the volume provides a panoramic picture of the global extent of venture capital, some of its challenges, and the likely direction of future efforts. Venture capital and the venture capitalist have been shown to have a positive impact on performance in many cases. This is clearly the reason why some many emerging economies want to increase the level of venture capital investment in their country.
