ISBN: 9535131710
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 186
Book Description
Properties and Uses of Microemulsions is intended to provide the reader with some important applications and features of these systems. The intricate composition of microemulsions has made them applicable in many areas such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, agriculture, oil recovery, chemical synthesis of nanoparticles, and catalysts. An introductory chapter starts off with the description of these applications followed by methods of characterization. Thereafter, a few practical applications of microemulsions focusing on drug delivery, oil recovery, and formation of nanocatalysts are described followed by the third section discussing the theoretical and physical parameters predicting microemulsion properties. The use of spin-polarized paramagnetic probes, bending energetics, and study of self-propelled motion are some of the physical parameters employed to characterize the microemulsions.

Microemulsions Theory and Practice
Author: Leon Prince
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323160409
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 192
Book Description
Microemulsions: Theory and Practice covers the development of the theory and practice of microemulsion systems. This book is divided into seven chapters that explore the physics and chemistry of microemulsions. This book deals first with the commercial history of microemulsions, from the discovery of carnauba wax emulsions to polymer emulsions. This topic is followed by discussions on the theoretical aspects of microemulsion formulation techniques and the design of other products. The subsequent chapter describes the microemulsion formulation with less solubilizer or emulsifier together with their optical properties. A chapter examines the mixed film theory that explains the dispersions, oil-water interface, and inferences in microemulsions. Another chapter considers the role of microemulsions in micellar solutions and their relations to the concentrations of different compounds. This chapter also looks into the association phenomena of three-component phase equilibria diagrams and liquids crystals to microemulsions. The concluding chapter discusses the role of the capillary and hydrostatic forces on the entrapment of oil in the reservoir and the necessary conditions for the displacement of entrapped oil. The important properties and economic aspects of a microemulsion slug required for the tertiary oil recovery are also covered in this chapter.

Microemulsions: Structure and Dynamics
Author: Friberg
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 135108304X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 225
Book Description
This book describes the microemulsion phenomenon in a systematic manner and not only provides an up-to-date introduction to this topic but aslo serves as the basis for further development in the area. The progress of microemulsion research has taken place in well-defined stages. The introduction period was founded on Schulman‘s original discovery and was, as expected, focused on the interfacial free energy. Because Schulman obtained his microemulsions from a macroemulsion by the addition of a cosurfactant. The present stage is characterized by an extensively enhanced knowledge about structure and dynamics in these systems. This has led to the realization that the structure of the microemulsions is related both to solutions with critical behaviour and long range order structures, the lyotropic liquid crystals. These two aspects have been elucidated independently by the French groups and by the Lund Spectroscopy group.

Microemulsions as stepping stones to greener organic chemistry
Author: Nadja Wulff
Publisher: Cuvillier Verlag
ISBN: 373694909X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 166
Book Description
In organic chemistry the simultaneous solubility of hydrophobic and hydrophilic reactants in a common solvent is an ubiquitous problem. Often either an expensive or a toxic solvent is needed. Alternatively, polar and non polar components are mixed into macroemulsions permitting them to react across the internal interface. However, macroemulsions display a comparatively small interfacial area. Thus, the reaction rate is low. Microemulsions feature an inherent vast interfacial area which facilitates significantly higher reaction rates. Furthermore, they allow a rather simple monitoring of the reaction kinetics by observing changes in the phase behavior. In this work the advantages of microemulsions as efficient reaction media for the photochemically induced Paternò Büchi reaction of pyruvic acid and 1 octene are elucidated. The amphiphilic reaction product 3 hexyl 2 methyloxetane 2 carboxylic acid influences the phase behavior of the microemulsion system significantly. With increasing UV exposure time the point of highest efficiency was shifted to lower temperatures and, interestingly, an increase of efficiency was detected. Hence, the newly created amphiphile acts as an efficient, hydrophobic cosurfactant. Additionally, with small angle neutron scattering and freeze fracture electron microscopy it was shown that the bicontinuous microstructure survives the UV irradiation. Another route towards green organic chemistry was opened by characterization of two new sustainable biosurfactants (mannosylerythritollipids (MEL) and cellobioselipids (CL)) in microemulsions.
