Book Description
A flavour of this book ... This small disk is called Carmichael’s Amulet and it commemorates the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria by the dates 1837 and 1897. These are the dates of her 60 years reign. To the right can be seen a mould that is carved from wood. It seems to have been professionally made in a large block that is well finished and furnished with a hook for hanging up. The mould may have produced butter pats or terrines for a Victorian celebration. As well as the Diamond Jubilee dates it commemorates the Record Reign that Queen Victoria had achieved in 1896 after being monarch for longer than George III. These images were taken by the authors as this book was being written and so they do not appear in the text which summarises an enormous variety of Diamond Jubilee souvenirs. Inside you will find a unique view of Victoriana that was made to celebrate one event at the height of the powers of the British Empire. The souvenirs will give you a glimpse into Victorian creative ingenuity as well as the thinking and beliefs of people in 1897.

Empire and Popular Culture

Empire and Popular Culture PDF Author: John Griffiths
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1351035290
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 949

Book Description
From 1830, if not before, the Empire began to permeate the domestic culture of Empire nations in many ways. From consumables, to the excitement of colonial wars, celebrations relating to events in the history of Empire, and the construction of Empire Day in the early Edwardian period, most citizens were encouraged to think of themselves not only as citizens of a nation but of an Empire. Much of the popular culture of the period presented Empire as a force for ‘civilisation’ but it was often far from the truth and rather, Empire was a repressive mechanism designed ultimately to benefit white settlers and the metropolitan economy. This four volume collection on Empire and Popular Culture contains a wide array of primary sources, complimented by editorial narratives which help the reader to understand the significance of the documents contained therein. It is informed by the recent advocacy of a ‘four-nation’ approach to Empire containing documents which view Empire from the perspective of England, Scotland Ireland and Wales and will also contain material produced for Empire audiences, as well as indigenous perspectives. The sources reveal both the celebratory and the notorious sides of Empire.

Victoria and Albert at Home

Victoria and Albert at Home PDF Author: Tyler Whittle
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 100381025X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 251

Book Description
First Published in 1980 Victoria and Albert at Home describes the sitting, construction, and decorating of the two royal residences at Osborne and Balmoral and paints a memorable portrait of the Queen’s family and her Court beside the Solent and the Dee. At the time of their marriage the royal couple had the use of many crown properties, but, except for Windsor Castle, they found none to their taste and began to look for a home of their own. Sir Robert Peel found them an estate on the Isle of Wight, which was peaceful, beautiful, and at that time sufficiently remote from London. However, when access from London became swifter and easier, their privacy was lost, and they looked elsewhere for a second private family residence. A small estate in Scotland was recommended and Prince Albert once again designed the house, this time in Scottish baronial style. Drawing on memories, archives, and family papers, some of which, with a number of illustrations, have never been published before, Tyler Whittle has written an interesting, entertaining, and vivid account of life at a time so very much more elegant and yet, at the same time, so very much robust than anything that can be imagined today. This is a must read for students and scholars of British history, and Royal history.

A Passionate Apprentice

A Passionate Apprentice PDF Author: Virginia Woolf
Publisher: Random House
ISBN: 1448182697
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 587

Book Description
A Passionate Apprentice comprises the first years of Virginia Woolf's Journal - from 1879 to 1909. Beginning in early January, when Woolf was almost fifteen, the pages open at a time when she was slowly recovering from a period of madness following her mother's death in May 1895. Between this January and the autumn of 1904, Woolf would suffer the deaths of her half-sister and of her father, and survive a summer of madness and suicidal depression. Behind the loss and confusion, however, and always near the surface of her writing is a constructive force at work - a powerful impulse towards health. It was an urge, through writing, to bring order and continuity out of chaos. Putting things into words and giving them deliberate expression had the effect of restoring reality to much that might otherwise have remained insubstantial. This early chronicle represents the beginning of the future Virginia Woolf's apprenticeship as a novelist. These pages show that rare instance when a writer of great importance leaves behind not only the actual documents of an apprenticeship, but also a biographical record of that momentous period as well. In Woolf's words, 'Here is a volume of fairly acute life (the first really lived year of my life).'
