Reports findings of a benchmark study conducted to examine agricultural producers' attitudes and behaviour with respect to change and risk management. The study had three phases: an exploratory phase involving focus groups and interviews, the results of which were used to develop a survey instrument; a quantitative pilot study (telephone survey) of 350 producers; and the main component of the research, using the findings from the first two phases, involving a questionnaire survey sent to over 1,700 producers. The survey sample represents farmers with gross farm sales of at least 10,000 who reported that the highest proportion of sales comes from crops, beef cattle, pigs, or horticulture. A profile of survey participants is provided. Results presented relate to producers' attitudes toward farming, confidence in ability to deal with change, attitudes & behaviour with regard to risk management and change, the role of government & industry in helping producers adapt to change, and awareness of government- & industry-sponsored initiatives. cluster analysis was used to group respondents into six distinct producer segments: business-oriented marketers, farming-oriented producers, uncertain smaller operators, traditional farmers, independent risk-takers, and farm business managers. The segments are profiled with respect to each area examined and compared across demographic variables. A copy of the survey instrument is appended.
