Le genre comme objet de recherche ne participe pas du domaine des objets consacrés et légitimes de la recherche en sciences sociales dans la plupart des pays d'Afrique noire. Ce qui est mis en relief, dans cet ouvrage, c'est l'absence relative d'intérêt des hommes, chercheurs en sciences sociales, pour une réflexion sur le genre. La biographie sociale du sexe peut être comprise comme une entreprise de mise en échec de la violence symbolique constitutive de la domination masculine. Ainsi se rejoignent savoir et pratique, science et militantisme. L'analyse de genre enrichit le champ d'étude des sciences sociales. Elle évite résolument le sentier périlleux et tortueux de la sociobiologie empruntée par Fukuyama pour rendre compte des rapports hommes-femmes au Cameroun. Les contributions réunies ici abordent le genre aussi bien sur le terrain de l'Etat, de l'école que sur celui de la société et de l'économie camerounaises. Si la route qui conduit à la parité des sexes est encore longue à parcourir, il reste que l'observation dévoile des tendances de modifications des valeurs et des pratiques contribuant, dans une certaine mesure, à moins infirmer les femmes et à délégitimer en partie la civilisation phallocratique des mœurs de genre. Le genre est abordé ici comme ayant partie liée avec le changement social.

This book brings to light work done in the area of gender with a penchant to language within the Cameroonian context. It looks at different domains of gender study where language is a significant variable. It is the very first edited collection that examines language and gender side by side. Contributors draw richly on their current theoretical leanings and on the current gendered discourses within the Cameroonian context to interrogate the interconnections between gender and language through social relationships and interactions. This is a pluri-disciplinary study informed by perspectives from anthropology, sociology and applied linguistics. The book hinges on gender, discourse and social change in historical perspective. Central to this book are Gbigbil women's experiences with different "reproductive interruptions": miscarriages, stillbirths, child deaths, induced abortions, and infertility. Rather than consider these events as inherently dissimilar as women do in Western countries, the Gbigbil women of eastern Cameroon see them all as instances of "wasted wombs" that leave their reproductive trajectories hanging in the balance. The women must navigate this uncertainty while negotiating their social positions, aspirations for the future, and the current workings of their bodies. Providing an intimate look into these processes, Wasted Wombs shows how Gbigbil women constantly shift their interpretations of when a pregnancy starts, what it contains, and what is lost in case of a reproductive interruption, in contrast to Western conceptions of fertility and loss. Depending on the context and on their life aspirations--be it marriage and motherhood, or an educational trajectory and employment, or profitable sexual affairs with so-called "big fish"--women negotiate and manipulate the meanings and effects of reproductive interruptions. Paradoxically, they often do so while portraying themselves as powerless. Wasted Wombs carefully analyzes such tactics in relation to the various social predicaments that emerge around reproductive interruptions, as well as the capricious workings of women's physical bodies.

This book explores a collective understanding of the perception and treatment of borders in Africa. The notion of boundary is universal as boundaries are also an important part of human social organization. Through the ages, boundaries have remained the container by which national space is delineated and contained. For as long as there has been human society based on territoriality and space, there have been boundaries. With their dual character of exclusivism and inclusivism, states have proven to adopt a more structural approach to the respect of the former in consciousness of the esteem of international law governing sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, frontier peoples and their realities have often opted for the latter situation, imposing a more functionalist perception of these imaginary lines and prompting a border opinion shift to a more blurring form of representation and meaning in most African communities. This collective multidisciplinary effort of understanding how tangible and intangible borders have influenced Africas attitude and existence for ages is worthy in its own rights. The difference between what borders are and what they are not to a people is the mere product of their own estimations and practices, a disposition that leads the contributors to this book to study borders beyond states or nations and how borders are crossed or transferred from one point to the other for the convenience of their histories and being.
