Finite and Locally Finite Groups

Finite and Locally Finite Groups PDF Author: B. Hartley
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401103291
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 469

Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Finite and Locally Finite Groups held in Istanbul, Turkey, 14-27 August 1994, at which there were about 90 participants from some 16 different countries. The ASI received generous financial support from the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. INTRODUCTION A locally finite group is a group in which every finite set of elements is contained in a finite subgroup. The study of locally finite groups began with Schur's result that a periodic linear group is, in fact, locally finite. The simple locally finite groups are of particular interest. In view of the classification of the finite simple groups and advances in representation theory, it is natural to pursue classification theorems for simple locally finite groups. This was one of the central themes of the Istanbul conference and significant progress is reported herein. The theory of simple locally finite groups intersects many areas of group theory and representation theory, so this served as a focus for several articles in the volume. Every simple locally finite group has what is known as a Kegel cover. This is a collection of pairs {(G , Ni) liE I}, where I is an index set, each group Gi is finite, i Ni

Finite Groups 2003

Finite Groups 2003 PDF Author: Chat Yin Ho
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110198126
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 434

Book Description
This is a volume of research articles related to finite groups. Topics covered include the classification of finite simple groups, the theory of p-groups, cohomology of groups, representation theory and the theory of buildings and geometries. As well as more than twenty original papers on the latest developments, which will be of great interest to specialists, the volume contains several expository articles, from which students and non-experts can learn about the present state of knowledge and promising directions for further research. The Finite Groups 2003 conference was held in honor of John Thompson. The profound influence of his fundamental contributions is clearly visible in this collection of papers dedicated to him.

Finite Groups of Lie Type

Finite Groups of Lie Type PDF Author: Roger W. Carter
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 570

Book Description
The finite groups of Lie type are of basic importance in the theory of groups. A classic in its field, this book presents the theories of finite groups of Lie type in a clear and accessible style, especially with regard to the main concepts of the theory and the techniques of proof used, and gives a detailed exposition of the complex representation theory.

Character Theory of Finite Groups

Character Theory of Finite Groups PDF Author: Mark L. Lewis
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821848275
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 194

Book Description
This volume contains a collection of papers from the Conference on Character Theory of Finite Groups, held at the Universitat de Valencia, Spain, on June 3-5, 2009, in honor of I. Martin Isaacs. The topics include permutation groups, character theory, p-groups, and group rings. The research articles feature new results on large normal abelian subgroups of p-groups, construction of certain wreath products, computing idempotents in group algebras of finite groups, and using dual pairs to study representations of cross characteristic in classical groups. The expository articles present results on vertex subgroups, measuring theorems in permutation groups, the development of super character theory, and open problems in character theory.

Groups

Groups PDF Author: Antonio Machì
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 8847024218
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 385

Book Description
Groups are a means of classification, via the group action on a set, but also the object of a classification. How many groups of a given type are there, and how can they be described? Hölder’s program for attacking this problem in the case of finite groups is a sort of leitmotiv throughout the text. Infinite groups are also considered, with particular attention to logical and decision problems. Abelian, nilpotent and solvable groups are studied both in the finite and infinite case. Permutation groups and are treated in detail; their relationship with Galois theory is often taken into account. The last two chapters deal with the representation theory of finite group and the cohomology theory of groups; the latter with special emphasis on the extension problem. The sections are followed by exercises; hints to the solution are given, and for most of them a complete solution is provided.

Whitehead Groups of Finite Groups

Whitehead Groups of Finite Groups PDF Author: Robert Oliver
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 0521336465
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 361

Book Description
This book's aim is to make accessible techniques for studying Whitehead groups of finite groups, as well as a variety of related topics such as induction theory and p-adic logarithms. The author has included a lengthy introduction to set the scene for non-specialists who want an overview of the field, its history and its applications. The rest of the book consists of three parts: general theory, group rings of p-groups and general finite groups. The book will be welcomed by specialists in K- and L-theory and by algebraists in general as a state-of-the art survey of the area.

Representations of Finite and Lie Groups

Representations of Finite and Lie Groups PDF Author: Charles Benedict Thomas
Publisher: Imperial College Press
ISBN: 9781860944840
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 158

Book Description
This book provides an introduction to representations of both finite and compact groups. The proofs of the basic results are given for the finite case, but are so phrased as to hold without change for compact topological groups with an invariant integral replacing the sum over the group elements as an averaging tool. Among the topics covered are the relation between representations and characters, the construction of irreducible representations, induced representations and Frobenius reciprocity. Special emphasis is given to exterior powers, with the symmetric group Sn as an illustrative example. The book concludes with a chapter comparing the representations of the finite group SL2(p) and the non-compact Lie group SL2(P).
