This volume is a collection of peer-reviewed articles providing a summary of the most recent accomplishments by many of the leaders of high-sulfur coal research and development. Improvements in coal cleaning technology by application of either physical, chemical, or biological processes, and new developments in both the froth flotation and oil agglomeration methods of cleaning are reported. Innovative electrostatic and aerodynamic methods are described for cleaning coal, and progress is noted in the development of coal desulfurization by either caustic leaching, oxidative leaching, microbial treatment, or low-temperature pyrolysis. Papers also included in this book concern the capture of sulfur oxides either during or following the combustion of coal; sorbent characterization and the effects of different factors and/or additives on sorbent utilization; the capture of sulfur oxides in various types of combustion systems, including pulverized coal, slagging, fluidized bed and magnetohydrodynamic systems. Recent technical developments are reported for sorbent injection in flue-gas ducts as a means of capturing sulfur oxides.

Utilization of high sulfur coals is becoming increasingly difficult in view of tighter environmental regulations being imposed around the world. To meet the challenge of utilizing high sulfur coals without damaging the environment, many scientists and engineers around the world are engaged in developing novel technologies. In the U.S.A. alone, the federal government has spent about five billion dollars to achieve that goal. This conference, like its predecessors, emphasizes desulfurization with papers on physical and chemical cleaning as well as post-treatment and fluid-bed combustion technologies. Of the 45 papers submitted, 15 papers deal with physical cleaning and 7 deal with chemical cleaning of coal, suggesting that a major emphasis is still be placed on pre-cleaning of coal. The post-treatment technologies, being developed with the support of U.S. federal and state government agencies, emphasize removal of both SOx and NOx gases. The book will be of particular interest and benefit to researchers, graduate students and other people involved in coal processing, characterization and utilization; public policy making and administration related to energy conservation, economic development, and environmental protection; and investors in industry and new technology.

Coal provides almost 40% of the world's electricity, and despite the understandable concern with respect to the environmental impact associated with coal use, forecasts from the International Energy Agency predict, that worldwide coal use will increase by up to 2% per annum until the year 2OlO. Faced with this increase, it is clearly important that the most efficient and environmentally acceptable clean coal technologies are available. This book is comprised of the proceedings of the Engineering Foundation Conference held in June 1993 in England. The objective of the conference was to present ideas on methods of predicting and reducing the effects of ash deposition in coal conversion systems, highlighting the problems experienced in industry, considering both utilities and industrial plants, and providing a view of the technology of coal ash deposition and its impact. Better techniques are needed to reduce the impact of ash deposition in coal fired plants, and these proceedings should form a reference document for anyone either experiencing slagging or actively engaged in trying to understand or eliminate the phenomenon.
