During this reporting period, major activities were continued on process system properties, chemical engineering and economic analyses for application to alternate processes under consideration for solar cell grade silicon. In Task 1, primary efforts were devoted to properties of silicon source materials. For silane, liquid viscosity data were correlated as a function of temperature to cover the entire liquid range. Estimates for gas and liquid thermal conductivity are reported. For Task 2, major efforts were devoted to preliminary process design for the conventional polysilicon process based on the rod reactor (hairpin) technology. The criteria for design were selected to be commensurate with the design basis for the alternate processes to produce solar cell grade silicon. Chemical engineering analysis activities in Task 2 also focused on preliminary process design for a silane (SiH/sub 4/) plant. A revised flowsheet received from Union Carbide has received a preliminary review, and process design has been reinitiated. In Task 3, preliminary cost analysis is in progress for the conventional polysilicon process used in the United States and Europe for the production of semiconductor grade polysilicon. Plant investment and product cost estimates will be determined upon completion of review of major process equipment and production labor requirements.

For chemical engineering analyses, the preliminary process design for the original silane process was completed for Cases A and B, Regular and Minimum Process Storage. Included are raw material useage, utility requirements, major process equipment list, and production labor requirements. The preliminary process design results for Cases A and B were used for economic analyses.

In property correlation efforts, property data results are presented for heat of vaporization, gas heat capacity, liquid heat capacity, liquid density, surface tension and gas viscosity of silane (SiH/sub 4/) as a function of temperature. Major chemical engineering analysis activities are being devoted to preliminary process design for a silane (SiH/sub 4/) plant that will produce 1000 metric tons/year of solar cell grade silicon. The technology developed by Union Carbide for the production of silane uses hydrogen and metallurgical grade silicon as raw materials. Preliminary process flow diagram and base conditions are reported. Preliminary process design was initiated for the conventional polysilicon process now used in the United States to produce semiconductor grade silicon from TCS (trichlorosilane, SiHCl/sub 3/). Economic analysis activities in Task 3 focused on development of a computer model to aid in estimation of product and plant investment costs for the alternate solar cell grade silicon processes. Application of the computer model to the Battelle process (Zn/SiCl/sub 4/) indicated $10,510,000 fixed capital investment and $9.63/KG of silicon for a 1000 metric ton/yr. plant. Economic analysis activities also centered on developing cost standardization techniques for application to the alternate processes.

Initial correlation efforts focused on vapor pressure data which are extremely important in phase equilibria in a chemical plant processing silicon source materials. The vapor pressure of silicon tetrachloride as a function of temperature was correlated by the relation log P/sub v/ = A + B/T + C log T + DT + ET/sup 2/. Values for the correlation constants A, B, C, D and E are presented. Correlation results for gas phase heat capacity of silicon tetrachloride C/sub p/ + A + BT + CT/sup 2/ + DT/sup 3/ are presented including data from American, Russian, German and Japanese sources. The apparatus for measuring thermal conductivity of gases was assembled and calibrated. Chemical engineering analysis was continued on the silane process (Union Carbide). The review and modification of the preliminary process design for the conventional polysilicon process were completed, and results are presented. Cost analysis activities for the production of semiconductor grade polysilicon via the conventional hair pin process technology were continued. Results are presented.

In Task 3, economic analysis activities were continued including survey results for product cost estimation techniques. Nominal values--product cost subitems for application to alternate processes--were selected. Economic results based on the preliminary process design are presented for the Zn/Sicl4 process. Capital investment (fixed) was determined at $10,100,000 for the 1000 metric/tons year plant. Total product cost was estimated at $9.49 per kg of silicon. (WDM).
