Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the New Jersey, Historical Society, Vol. 3: 1848-1849 The Society met at this place this day in accordance with the bylaws, the President, Judge Hornblower, in the chair. After the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved, on motion of Mr. Gifford, of Newark, the minutes of the last January meeting were also read; and the reconsideration of the resolution of approval adopted at the subsequent meeting was moved by him with a view of supplying an apparent deficiency in the record, but on putting the question the motion was lost. The Corresponding Secretary stated, that since his last report, communications had been exchanged with the Historical Societies of Kentucky and Pennsylvania, the American Antiq. Society, the New England Hist, and Genealogical Society, and other institutions, and laid upon the table letters from the Rev. O. M. Johnson, of Orange county, New York, a corresponding member, transmitting a book for the library and promising an original Ms. Discourse relating to the history of Deckertown in this State - from the Rev. Wm. Cogswell, D. D., of Boston, in acknowledgment of his election as an honorary member of the Society - from Major James D. Graham, of U. S. Hoosiers and the American Story

Hoosiers and the American Story PDF Author: Madison, James H.
Publisher: Indiana Historical Society
ISBN: 0871953633
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 359

Book Description
A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

The Failed Promise of the American High School, 1890-1995

The Failed Promise of the American High School, 1890-1995 PDF Author: David L. Angus
Publisher: Teachers College Press
ISBN: 9780807738429
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
This provocative new study of the American high school examines the historical debates about curriculum policy and also traces changes in the institution itself, as evidenced by what students actually studied. Contrary to conventional accounts, the authors argue that beginning in the 1930s, American high schools shifted from institutions primarily concerned with academic and vocational education to institutions mainly focused on custodial care of adolescents. Claiming that these changes reflected educators' racial, class, and gender biases, the authors offer original suggestions for policy adjustments that may lead to greater educational equality for our ever-growing and ever more diverse population of students.

Grape Man of Texas

Grape Man of Texas PDF Author: Roy Renfro
Publisher: Board and Bench Publishing
ISBN: 1935879588
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 351

Book Description
Grape Man of Texas is the first biography of Thomas Volney Munson (1843-1913), the internationally recognized horticulturist who developed over 300 new varieties of grapes, some of which are still grown today on almost every continent. He is perhaps best known for his work in fighting the phylloxera epidemic of the late nineteenth century, which nearly destroyed the world's vineyards. His solution—grafting vinifera onto certain resistant native rootstocks from Texas—earned him the Chevalier du Merite Agricole in the French Legion of Honor and numerous accolades. This second edition introduces new insights into the phylloxera period, Munson's many papers and publications, and his far-sighted grasp of the needs of twentieth century agriculture and transportation. It details the continuing influence of both his research and his hybrid grapes on modern viticulture and new varieties of vitis that have been bred from them around the world.
