Excerpt from book: with a steel tape line adjusted to a standard measure at a temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit; the survey was made on a cold day when the thermometer indicated zero. This difference of temperature shortened the tape measure at the rate of about Ts foot per 1,000 feet. The first line 1164 feet was consequently measured A of a foot too short. The second line 580 feet long was measured rsoVo foot too short, the third line 1,000 feet long Jfo foot too short. The fourth and last line 584 feet long about rVc foot short, and the survey lacks in area 670 square feet or rVirV of an acre worth three and T?.o dollars, effecting a value of 22 cents per acre or more than double that in the first case. Although the difference of temperature named may be considered rather unusual, yet it is possible and quite liable to happen. Just let us consider the error that may be caused by one-half the change of temperature above stated, and the error would still effect more dollars and cents than the seemingly great inaccuracies of the old time survey first spoken of. Again, when Bazaleel Wells laid out Canton in 1806, a chain was used so much too long that a block three chains or 198 feet long on the original plat now measures 200 feet; here is an error of one foot in one hundred. During the original owner's life the lots were not worth over one dollar per foot front, now they are worth $2OO per foot front, so that present measurements should not vary more than roW of a foot per 100 feet, in order that errors of present measurements will effect values that will not exceed those of the original survey.
