The Experimental Foundations of Particle Physics

The Experimental Foundations of Particle Physics PDF Author: Robert N. Cahn
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 113947992X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 567

Book Description
Our current understanding of elementary particles and their interactions emerged from break-through experiments. This book presents these experiments, beginning with the discoveries of the neutron and positron, and following them through mesons, strange particles, antiparticles, and quarks and gluons. This second edition contains new chapters on the W and Z bosons, the top quark, B-meson mixing and CP violation, and neutrino oscillations. This book provides an insight into particle physics for researchers, advanced undergraduate and graduate students. Throughout the book, the fundamental equations required to understand the experiments are derived clearly and simply. Each chapter is accompanied by reprinted articles and a collection of problems with a broad range of difficulty.

Historical Roots of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking

Historical Roots of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking PDF Author: Rocco Gaudenzi
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030998959
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 139

Book Description
What are the thinking processes and knowledge resources involved in a complex discovery? How can the physics of solids, the physics of nuclei, and elementary particle physics cross-fertilise in spite of the widely differing domains and energy scales they deal with? This book addresses the questions by reconstructing and examining from the historical epistemological perspective the fascinating heuristic path to the concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking. This analysis especially brings to light the role that analogical reasoning and mathematical reformulations played in the discovery process, as well as the influence of the Japanese milieu and approach to physical problems.

Invariance Principles and Elementary Particles

Invariance Principles and Elementary Particles PDF Author: Jun John Sakurai
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400877873
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
J. J. Sakurai's treatment of various elementary particle phenomena, is written for those not completely familiar with field theory who wish to gain insight into theoretical problems. Since the manuscript for his book was completed, a very important development has taken place in particle physics-the discovery of the p, w, and n mesons: in view of this development, the author has added a new section devoted exclusively to these new mesons and resonances. Originally published in 1964. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Globalizing Physics

Globalizing Physics PDF Author: Roberto Lalli
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198878699
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
This is an open access book available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read on the Oxford Academic platform and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Following the centenary of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, this volume features contributions from leading science historians from around the world on the changing roles of the institution in international affairs from its foundation in 1922 to the present. The case studies presented in this volume show the multitude of functions that IUPAP had and how these were related to the changing international political contexts. The book is divided into three parts. The first discusses the interwar period demonstrating how the exclusion of communities of the Central Powers from international scientific institutions imposed by victorious allied countries made IUPAP ineffective until the end of World War II. The second part analyzes the changing roles assumed by IUPAP starting from its complete renovation after World War II. Case studies covering the role of IUPAP in physics education, in metrology, in joint commissions with other unions and in defining the complex relations between pure and applied physics provide examples of IUPAP's impact on the world of science. Part III squarely addresses the science diplomacy aspects of IUPAP during the Cold War highlighting the importance of IUPAP in furthering diplomatic goals and explaining the origin of the pursuit of the free circulation of scientists as the activity that characterized the main function of international unions during the Cold War. Highlighting how often scientific agendas and political imperatives were entangled in the activities of IUPAP, the book analyzes the work of the Union as exercises of science diplomacy, thus contributing to the current debate on the use of science and technology in international relations.
