Bivalve Filter Feeders

Bivalve Filter Feeders PDF Author: Richard F. Dame
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642783538
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 576

Book Description
Bivalve filter-feeding mollusks are important components of coastal ecosystems because they remove large quantities of suspended material from the water and excrete abundant amounts of reactive nutrients. These animals are also major prey for numerous predators including birds, fish, mammals, and invertebrates; furthermore, they are significant food resources for humans. While studies on the organismic and population level have dominated bivalve ecology, the recent focus on the ecosystem roles of filter feeding systems has led to larger-scale investigations. With this approach the specific topics of physiology, grazing, predation, nutrient cycling, physical environment, computer simulation modeling, and environmental management are combined into a meaningful whole.

Biodiversity, Temperate Ecosystems, and Global Change

Biodiversity, Temperate Ecosystems, and Global Change PDF Author: Timothy J.B. Boyle
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642789722
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 455

Book Description
Reviewed here is the current state of knowledge concerning the relationship between global change and biodiversity of temperate ecosystems. The aim is to improve the ability to conserve biodiversity under conditions of global change. The book focuses on: - The threats posed by global change to biodiversity in temperate ecosystems; - Levels and spatial patterns of diversity in temperate ecosystems; - The impact of global change on genetic diversity; - The effects of disturbance (natural and anthropogenic) on temperate ecosystems; - Existing research priorities and programmes.

Ecological Restoration of Aquatic and Semi-Aquatic Ecosystems in the Netherlands (NW Europe)

Ecological Restoration of Aquatic and Semi-Aquatic Ecosystems in the Netherlands (NW Europe) PDF Author: P.H. Nienhuis
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401713359
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 239

Book Description
This work presents the state of the art of aquatic and semi-aquatic ecological restoration projects in The Netherlands. Starting from the conceptual basis of restoration ecology, the successes and failures of hundreds of restoration projects are described. Numerous successful projects are mentioned. In general ecological restoration endeavours greatly benefit from the progressive experience achieved in the course of the years. Failures mainly occur through insufficient application of physical, chemical or ecological principles. Spontaneous colonization by plants and animals, following habitat reconstruction, is preferred. However, sometimes the re-introduction of keystone species (e.g. eelgrass, salmon, beaver) is necessary in case the potential habitats are isolated or fragmented, or if a seed bank is lacking, thus not allowing viable populations to develop. Re-introducing traditional management techniques (e.g. mowing without fertilization, low intensity grazing) is important to rehabilitate the semi-natural and cultural landscapes that are so characteristic for The Netherlands.

The Land-Sea Interactions

The Land-Sea Interactions PDF Author: André Monaco
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1848217021
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
This book presents a systemic view of the diversity of pressures and impacts produced by climate change and human actions. Erosion of biodiversity by changing ocean chemistry, the intensification of global change raises the problem of the adaptation of living resources. Land uses induce ecological imbalances leading to asphyxiation true coastal ecosystems. More than a billion tons of solid waste must be assimilated by the marine environment and food webs. Radioactive discharges emitted into the atmosphere or into the aquatic environment, raise the question of their future. Sea and Ocean series offers a transversal approach of the ocean system that leads to governance, sustainable resource management and adaptation of societies.

Spatializing the History of Ecology

Spatializing the History of Ecology PDF Author: Raf de Bont
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1351750925
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 251

Book Description
This book advances a spatial perspective on the history of ecology. Intrigued by broader debates in the humanities on the "spatial turn," the authors contribute to a more explicit and systematic development of spatial thinking in the history of ecology, exploring to which extent a spatial perspective can shed new light on the history of ecological science, and using ecology as a critical site to gain broader insights into the history of the environment in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
