Book Description
The recent changes in global politics that we all have experienced have also led to a rethinking of naval strategy. This strategy has been summarized in the White Paper ' ... From the Sea'. The primary message of this new policy is that the Navy will refocus from deep water operations to coastal and over-the-shore operations. The goal of the Coastal Ocean Modeling Workshop is to review ongoing work in light of this changing strategy and to recommend a program that is responsive to these changes. In doing so, the aim is to assure that the objectives of the Navy Ocean Modeling and Prediction Program are in line with Navy/Marine Corps operational needs for environmental products and that modeling efforts yield products that are optimized for rapid implementation into operational environments.

The Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate

The Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate PDF Author: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9781009157971
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 755

Book Description
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for assessing the science related to climate change. It provides policymakers with regular assessments of the scientific basis of human-induced climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation. This IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate is the most comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the observed and projected changes to the ocean and cryosphere and their associated impacts and risks, with a focus on resilience, risk management response options, and adaptation measures, considering both their potential and limitations. It brings together knowledge on physical and biogeochemical changes, the interplay with ecosystem changes, and the implications for human communities. It serves policymakers, decision makers, stakeholders, and all interested parties with unbiased, up-to-date, policy-relevant information. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Modelling Coastal Sea Processes: Proceedings Of The International Ocean And Atmosphere Pacific Conference

Modelling Coastal Sea Processes: Proceedings Of The International Ocean And Atmosphere Pacific Conference PDF Author: John Noye
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814495816
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 364

Book Description
This book contains updated, reviewed versions of the best papers on “Modelling Coastal Sea Processes” presented at the International Ocean and Atmosphere Pacific Conference, held in Adelaide, South Australia, on 23-27 October 1995. The articles were selected on both scientific merit and usefulness to coastal engineers, physical oceanographers and marine biologists. They cover a range of topics including the modelling of tides and storm surges (especially inundation due to surges), the analysis of modelled or recorded data to permit prediction of tide heights over tidal flats and tidal currents in the presence of coastal eddies, and the modelling of dispersion of fish larvae from spawning grounds to coastal nurseries. Computational techniques are emphasised in line with modern applications, but some analytical techniques have also been included.

Ocean Modeling and Parameterization

Ocean Modeling and Parameterization PDF Author: Eric P. Chassignet
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780792352280
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 468

Book Description
The realism of large scale numerical ocean models has improved dra matically in recent years, in part because modern computers permit a more faithful representation of the differential equations by their algebraic analogs. Equally significant, if not more so, has been the improved under standing of physical processes on space and time scales smaller than those that can be represented in such models. Today, some of the most challeng ing issues remaining in ocean modeling are associated with parameterizing the effects of these high-frequency, small-space scale processes. Accurate parameterizations are especially needed in long term integrations of coarse resolution ocean models that are designed to understand the ocean vari ability within the climate system on seasonal to decadal time scales. Traditionally, parameterizations of subgrid-scale, high-frequency mo tions in ocean modeling have been based on simple formulations, such as the Reynolds decomposition with constant diffusivity values. Until recently, modelers were concerned with first order issues such as a correct represen tation of the basic features of the ocean circulation. As the numerical simu lations become better and less dependent on the discretization choices, the focus is turning to the physics of the needed parameterizations and their numerical implementation. At the present time, the success of any large scale numerical simulation is directly dependent upon the choices that are made for the parameterization of various subgrid processes.
