Issues in Guyana's Development

Issues in Guyana's Development PDF Author: Winston Felix
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1300328096
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 104

Book Description
Although it has been more than a century since Guyana and Venezuela border dispute was settled, Venezuela continues to shift its foreign policy away from compliance with its international obligations. It is approximately 128 years since diplomatic relations were severed between Venezuela and Great Britain over the border issue. At the insistence of Venezuela, the United States considered the controversy as falling within the purview of the Monroe Doctrine. Consequently, the United States pressured Great Britain into making an Agreement with Venezuela in 1897. Unlike Venezuela which is over two centuries old, it has been 49 years since Guyana gained its independence from Great Britain. Since that time, there have been several challenges to the country's Development. It will be shown that some of these challenges have had devastated consequences for Development. The operating premise is that a country's development objectives are best attained if there is a stable political climate.

The Age of Sustainable Development

The Age of Sustainable Development PDF Author: Jeffrey D. Sachs
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231539002
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 564

Book Description
Jeffrey D. Sachs is one of the world's most perceptive and original analysts of global development. In this major new work he presents a compelling and practical framework for how global citizens can use a holistic way forward to address the seemingly intractable worldwide problems of persistent extreme poverty, environmental degradation, and political-economic injustice: sustainable development. Sachs offers readers, students, activists, environmentalists, and policy makers the tools, metrics, and practical pathways they need to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. Far more than a rhetorical exercise, this book is designed to inform, inspire, and spur action. Based on Sachs's twelve years as director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, his thirteen years advising the United Nations secretary-general on the Millennium Development Goals, and his recent presentation of these ideas in a popular online course, The Age of Sustainable Development is a landmark publication and clarion call for all who care about our planet and global justice.

Neoliberal Democratization and New Authoritarianism

Neoliberal Democratization and New Authoritarianism PDF Author: Dennis C. Canterbury
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351152823
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
Originally published in 2005. Domestic and foreign economic and political policies in the rich capitalist nations in the North and in the poor countries in the South are geared towards globalization and democratization. Indeed the dominant view held by countries in the North is that globalization leads to democracy and vice versa, and that in turn economic development will result from that process. Thus many scarce resources are allocated to bring about globalization and democracy. Exploring the dynamics of change that allow for the persistence of authoritarian states in the Third World, this illuminating book highlights certain aspects of democratization that have not been investigated fully. Anyone interested in development politics and political sociology will draw a plethora of important theoretical insights into globalization, authoritarianism and transition/democratization from this original study.
