A first edition of the Arabic text and the Hebrew text of the Problemata Physica, ascribed to Aristotle, which has been elaborated in later Antiquity in Greek. The text, corresponding with the first 15 books of the existing Greek text, contains chiefly medical problems, but also biological and mathematical ones. Therefore this volume deals with a comparison of the existing Greek text and the lost extended Greek version, only transmitted in this Arabic translation and in this Hebrew translation of the Arabic version. The authorship of the famous translator ḥunain ibn Ishāq has been discussed. The role of the Problemata Physica in Arabic literature has not been omitted. Interesting for Semitic linguistics is the description of the language used by ḥunain ibn Ishāq and Moses ibn Tibbon, and of the influence of Arabic on the Hebrew of the translators. Glossaries have been added to give the reader the opportunity to compare the Arabic text with the Greek and the Hebrew ones.

The Sciences of Homosexuality in Early Modern Europe investigates early modern scientific accounts of same-sex desires and the shapes they assumed in everyday life. It explores the significance of those representations and interpretations from around 1450 to 1750, long before the term homosexuality was coined and accrued its current range of cultural meanings. This collection establishes that efforts to produce scientific explanations for same-sex desires and sexual behaviours are not a modern invention, but have long been characteristic of European thought. The sciences of antiquity had posited various types of same-sexual affinities rooted in singular natures. These concepts were renewed, elaborated, and reassessed from the late medieval scientific revival to the early Enlightenment. The deviance of such persons seemed outwardly inscribed upon their bodies, documented in treatises and case studies. It was attributed to diverse inborn causes such as distinctive anatomies or physiologies, and embryological, astrological, or temperamental factors. The Aristotle Collection of the University of Pennsylvania Library owes its existence to Dr. Charles W. Burr, Professor in the University's Medical School and generous donor to the library. His gifts of books over a long period of years included any valuable Aristotle items and in 1932 he presented his own library to the University. A bequest at his death in 1944 established a fund which has enabled the library to purchase a number of important additions to the collection. These books and manuscripts are a rich source for those interested in medieval and Renaissance scholarship. The very number of the early printed editions in this catalogue—over five hundred—attests to the importance that was attached to the study of Aristotle during the fifteenth, sixteenth, and even the seventeenth centuries. Medieval Latin translations of the texts of Aristotle continued to appear during the Renaissance. The twelfth-century translations of Guilelmus of Moerbeke can be noted in this catalogue as late as 1589; even when a contemporary translation was available and was used, it was not uncommon for the earlier version to be printed with it. The list of commentators, translators, and editors of the Aristotelian tradition includes the names of many well-known humanists from all over the continent. These men, protagonists of the new learning, nevertheless concerned themselves with that same philosopher who so dominated the teachings of the medieval schools. Another indication of the Aristotelian influence is the great number of translations of his works into the vernacular. The German, Italian, and French versions in this collection, as well as in others, attest to the wide interest in his works in Europe. Few aspect of medieval and Renaissance civilization were free from the influence of "The Philosopher" and this work is therefore a valuable adjunct to any study of the period. Mediaevalia Lovaniensia 40Medieval translators played an important role in the development and evolution of a scientific lexicon. At a time when most scholars deferred to authority, the translations of canonical texts assumed great importance. Moreover, translation occurred at two levels in the Middle Ages. First, Greek or Arabic texts were translated into the learned language, Latin. Second, Latin texts became source texts themselves, to be translated into the vernaculars as their importance across Europe started to increase.The situation of the respective translators at these two levels was fundamentally different: whereas the former could rely on a long tradition of scientific discourse, the latter had the enormous responsibility of actually developing a scientific vocabulary. The contributions in the present volume investigate both levels, greatly illuminating the emergence of the scientific terminology and concepts that became so fundamental in early modern intellectual discourse. The present volume offers a systematic discussion of the complex relationship between medicine and paradoxography in the ancient world. For a long time, the relationship between the two has been assumed to be virtually non-existent. Paradoxography is concerned with disclosing a world full of marvels and wondrous occurrences without providing an answer as to how these phenomena can be explained. Its main aim is to astonish and leave its readers bewildered and confused. By contrast, medicine is committed to the rational explanation of human phusis, which makes it, in a number of significant ways, incompatible with thauma. This volume moves beyond the binary opposition between ‘rational’ and ‘non-rational’ modes of thinking, by focusing on instances in which the paradox is construed with direct reference to established medical sources and beliefs or, inversely, on cases in which medical discourse allows space for wonder and admiration. Its aim is to show that thauma, rather than present a barrier, functions as a concept which effectively allows for the dialogue between medicine and paradoxography in the ancient world.

This work deals with Aristotle's Topics, a textbook on how to argue successfully in a debate organised in a certain way. The origins of the three branches of logic can be found here: logic of propositions, of predicates and of relations. Having dealt with the structure of the dialectical debates and the theory of the predicables, the central notion of the topos is analysed. Topoi are principles of arguments designed to help a disputant refute his opponent and function as hypotheses in hypothetical syllogisms, the main form of argument in the Topics. Traces of the crystallization of their theory can be found in the Topics and Analytics. The author analyses a selection of topoi including those according to which categorical and relational syllogisms are constructed.
