Biochemical and Clinical Aspects of Hemoglobin Abnormalities

Biochemical and Clinical Aspects of Hemoglobin Abnormalities PDF Author: Winslow Caughey
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323142745
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 746

Book Description
Biochemical and Clinical Aspects of Hemoglobin Abnormalities contains the proceedings of a symposium held on the Pingree Park campus of Colorado State University on October 2-7, 1977. Contributors discuss the biochemical and clinical aspects of hemoglobin abnormalities and cover topics ranging from amino acid substitutions to sickle cell disease, glycosylated hemoglobins, cystamine inhibition of sickling, and gelation of sickle cell hemoglobin. This volume is organized into 52 chapters and begins with a discussion of the role of distal residues in structure, ligand binding, and oxidation of hemoglobins A, Zurich, and Sydney. It then turns to functional abnormalities of whole blood in sickle cell anemia, inhibition of sickle hemoglobin gelation by amino acids and peptides, and intermolecular interactions in crystals of human deoxy hemoglobins A, C, F, and S. The chapters that follow focus on glycosylation of human hemoglobin, the phase transitions of sickle-cell hemoglobin, conformational effects of the HbS mutation, and mechanisms for hemoglobin oxidation. The reader is also introduced to oxidation of oxyhemoglobin by reductants, the kinetics of oxygen binding to human red blood cells, and oxidation of human hemoglobin by copper. A chapter that assesses the effect of physiological parameters, such as pH, oxygen concentration, protein concentration, non-gelling hemoglobins, and the erythrocyte membrane, on the kinetics of polymerization of deoxyhemoglobin S concludes the book. This book is intended for biochemists and clinicians interested in knowing more about hemoglobin abnormalities.

Probes and Membrane Function

Probes and Membrane Function PDF Author: Britton Chance
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 148327148X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 582

Book Description
Probes of Structure and Function of Macromolecules and Membranes, Volume I: Probes and Membrane Function discusses the developments in techniques for the measurement of rapid reactions and detection of enzymatic reactions in simple and complex systems. This book describes the application of the incisive techniques employed for the study of activity-related structural changes in enzymes to functionally related structural changes in membranes. The structural changes initiated in response to energy coupling and ion movements in mitochondria and axons are also elaborated. This publication covers the basic mechanisms by which structural changes can participate in energy coupling at the redox level of the hemoproteins that leads to the evaluation of the function of ubiquinone and cytochrome b in energy coupling. The function of factors that couple electron transport and energy conservation is likewise considered. This volume is a good reference for students and researchers conducting work on the structure and function of macromolecules and membranes.

Transition Metals in Biochemistry

Transition Metals in Biochemistry PDF Author: A. S. Brill
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642811485
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 193

Book Description
Transition metal ions in biological systems are of interest in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, medicine, and physics. Scien tists with rather different viewpoints, employing many methods, have contributed to this area. A concise review of the current state of the field will, to some extent, reflect the special knowledge of the person writing it - in this case application of physical methods to the investigation of metal coordination. x ray diffraction is one of the most important of these methods, but a useful treatment of X-ray structure analysis would be com parable in size with and beyond the scope of the monograph. Many results of X-ray diffraction studies are, of course, presented. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy has played a major part in the rapid advance in knowledge of the electronic struc tures of transition metal ions in biological systems. More gener ally, measurements involving light, microwaves, and magnetic fields are capable of producing much new information, and the required instrumentation is available at most research institu tions. Therefore light absorption and paramagnetic resonance are treated in depth. The principles described in the latter discus sions are broadly applicable, for example to the promising tech niques of X-ray spectroscopy (utilizing synchrotron radiation) and lanthanide-perturbed, very high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Introduction to Modern Biochemistry 4e

Introduction to Modern Biochemistry 4e PDF Author: P Karlson
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323162177
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 560

Book Description
Introduction to Modern Biochemistry, Fourth Edition provides an understanding of the chemical background of biological phenomena. This book discusses the concepts of generation and utilization of free energy. Organized into 23 chapters, this edition starts with an overview of the important role of amides in biochemistry. This text then explores the chemical structure of proteins and describes the methods of determining the amino acids sequence of proteins. Other chapters consider the role of genes in protein and enzyme synthesis. This book discusses as well the significance of the submicroscopic structure of the cell in biochemical reactions. The reader is also introduced to the chemistry of the carbohydrates. The final chapter deals with biochemical functions of various organs, including the digestive tract, liver, kidney, nervous system, muscles, and connective tissues. This book is a valuable resource for biologists, biochemists, scientists, researchers, and readers who are interested in the field of biochemistry.
