We inspected the prison, mines, machin ery, equipment, etc., and rode over a portion of the State's lands and some adjoining properties, examining the coal Openings and outcroppings on the New River side of the mountains northeast of the mines. On our inspection of the several mines and the land, Mr. R. A. Shiflett, Chief Mine Inspector, although ill and physically unequal to the task went with the committee, and his very val nable information and suggestions were of much assistance to the committee.
