Book Description
Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 31: November, 1937 The intellectual tasks of the Christian Church vary according to the problems which Christianity has to face at a given time. Certain major problems are always with us, but other problems grow out of particular circumstances. I venture to say that the intellectual task of the Christian Church in our time moves within two f oei. One is the fact - the terrifying fact - oi world disintegration. The second focus is the fact, the inspiring fact, of world unitv in Christ. In the center of chaos in the secular order stands the Beloved Com munity, the Church of the Living God, the one great hope under God for mankind at such a time as this. So let us consider the so-called thought bearings of these two facts, because after all a major task of thought is to clarify, to dehne, to state issues, to suggest solutions. Book Description
Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 25: November, 1931 We cannot, in fact, do otherwise than so take our stand for our Christianity. And if we shall seem all that is foolish in doing so, our only answer must be in the words of the na tive assistant of Dr. Schweitzer.108 Once when Dr. Schweitzer, after an operation out yon in the deeps of Africa was discouraged over the impossibility of getting ideas of cleanliness and anti-sepsis into the mind of the Negroes, he said in his discouragement: What a fool I am to try it. But his assistant answered, A fool perhaps on earth, but not in Heaven. We are not so naive as to assert that all God's children are on our side; we only give notice that so far as in us lies, we shall strive to be on what we consider God's side.
