Book Description
Excerpt from 1847 Prince's Descriptive Catalogue of Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Shrubbery, Vines and Plants: Cultivated and for Sale at the Great Original Establishment, Prince's Linnaean Botanic Garden and Nurseries, Flushing, Long Island, Near New-York In justice to your establishment I think I ought to say, that since 1832 I have received from your father and yourself above 350 different varieties of Fruit Trees. A large proportion of them have produced fruit, proba bly over 300. I have watched their progress with the. Utmost care, preserving a record of the location of every tree and examining the fruit with the principal English and American authors before me. Thus far I have ascertained only five misnomers. There are five more which Iyet consider doubtful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Prince's Descriptive Catalogue of Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Shrubbery and Plants, 1844: Cultivated and for Sale at the Linnæan Botanic Garden and Nurseries, Flushing, Long Island, Near New-York The stock of some of the newest sorts of trees is limited, and those trees, in consequence of their recent introduction, are of less size. Many other varieties will be announced hereafter in a Supplementary Catalogue, additional time being necessary as well for their propagation, as for judicious investigations, but in the mean time scions of them for en grafting can be supplied. New fruits are not added to the collection, merely, because their names differ, but a selection is made of those only, which merit and have received the encomiums of persons acquainted with the subject. Every tree when sent forth from the garden, is duly labelled; and from fifteen to forty trees are usually packed in each matted bundle, and where boxes are preferable, from 60 to 100 Trees and Shrubs can be packed in each. Book Description
Excerpt from Prince's Descriptive Catalogue of Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Shrubbery, Vines and Plants, 1845 and 1846: Cultivated and for Sale at the Great Original Establishment, Prince's Linnæan Botanic Garden and Nurseries, Flushing, Long Island, Near New-York In the arrangement of the present Catalogue we have made free. Use of the knowledge and information we possess as to the qualities of the respective fruits, and we have instituted such a discrimination as cannot fail. To be of immense importance to all cultivators who are solicitous of making judicious selections. In order that the benefits resulting from the present advanced stage of Pomological knowledge may be generally diffused, the utmost pains have been taken to comprise in our Catalogues, ample descriptions of the respective varieties of Fruits, &c., and it Will be perceived at a glance, that no Similar publication has ever ap peered, that can bear any comparison in point of extent and accuracy With the present edition in this respect. These descriptions have been mostly derived from an inspection of the fruits in the extensive specimen grounds of this establishment, and the young trees in the Nurseries connected therewith are propagated from. The same specimen trees from which the descriptions were made. The valuable Catalogue of the London Horticultural Society has furnished collateral aid, and to our estimable friend, the late Robert Manning, and to Judge George Hoadley, Messrs. William Kenr'ick, Andrew Lackey Junior, S. C. Hildreth, and others, we are also indebted for an exchange of information. Book Description
Excerpt from Prince's Select Descriptive Catalogue of the Unrivaled Collection of Fruit and Ornamental Trees and Shrubs, Vines, Creepers, Paeonies, &C., 1860 and 1861: Cultivated at the Linnaean Botanic Garden and Nurseries The climate of Long Island being subject at all times to the boisterous winds of the Ocean and the Sound, seems to be particularly favorable to perfecting the hardihood of Trees. The vacilla tions of alternate cold and mild periods during the winter, accompanied by the frequent freezings and thawings to which trees are here subject throughout all stages, prepares them for the endur ance of the utmost degree of cold and rigor incident to the most northern latitude; it being found that trees, like men, become much more hardened in a changeable climate than in one regularly cold where the constitution is not subjected to trials. Book Description
Excerpt from Prince's Select Descriptive Catalogue of the Unrivaled Collection of Fruit and Ornamental Trees and Shrubs, Vines, Creepers, Peonies, &C: Cultivated at the Linnaean Botanic Garden and Nurseries, Flushing, Near New York It is doubtless from this cause that the Long Island Trees with which New England has been generally supplied, and also those which have been sent to the coolest regions of the West, have been found to better withstand the severest winters, than those which have been obtained from other localities. Indeed, it can be readily realized that trees so robust and hardy, and yet so vigorous, must possess a great superiority over those grown in localities where the mercury sinks each year to 10 and 20 below zero during a very prolonged winter, thus retaining the trees in a frozen, torpid and death-like state for many months, freezing and bursting the inner vessels, affecting the sap, and probably causing sap-blight, and weakening them to such a degree that they can never regain their original health and strength. Some lessons may be derived from the fatal experience of the three past winters at the West, to which may be superadded the inconsiderate use by many nurseries of unsuitable stocks for budding and grafting, and especially of the tender Mazzard stock for Cherries, instead of the hardy Mahaleb, the latter alone being suited to the N orth and West. No Trees grown here are ever winter-killed; and the pear-blight, so destructive in the western part of this State, is unknown here.
