Book Description
Excerpt from Meyer Brothers Druggist, Vol. 26: Published Monthly in the Interest of the Entire Drug Trade; September, 1905 Rising by Just Degrees in the Service of His Employer, the first proof of his devotion to duty came with the epi demic of cholera, which ravaged the land during the year 1849. As a result of the panic and exodus which followed the appearance of the disease in his little city, he was left alone in the store to serve the medi cines needed for the Sick. The temptation to abandon his charge and leave for a less dangerous neighbor hood no doubt appealed to him, and with great force, as the death list grew longer and longer, but he saw his duty and it held him to the end. With happier times came conditions that were easier. An opportunity, together with the small savings of his frugal life, enabled him to become part owner of a drug store. Here his great talent for business at once made itself manifest, honesty, economy and care ful management soon enabled him to absorb by pur chase his partner's interest and he became sole owner. The ambition and restless activity which were the moving factors in his life, led him now to lay plans on a larger scale. In a brief period of time he was the head and ruling spirit of Meyer Brother Co., a con cern that at once became the leading drug firm of Fort Wayne, Ind. Thus from an humble immigrant lad we see him lifted solely by his own exertions to a position of leadership in his chosen vocation. This Triumph Would be Enough to Satisfy the Average Man; but our deceased president was not an average man. As soon as he had accustomed himself to his surround ings, his ambition to go higher moved him to seek a larger field for his enterprising temperament. His su perior foresight convinced him that St. Louis offered an opportunity, at a time when in the judgment of many intelligent men the conditions were adverse. Results proved the wisdom of his choice. There were without doubt stormy periods in those early days, financial problems, fluctuating markets, unstable cred its, all of which conspired to make the life of Mr. Meyer one of toil, worry and vexation. But he was equipped for the struggle. He possessed a tenacity of purpose, a resourcefulness, mental clearness and a reputation for integrity, which carried him safely through those troubled waters; and now, that he has passed out of our lives, we who knew him as he was, who knew his sterling character, his rigid ideals, his unyielding opposition to everything that was base, mean or questionable as we gaze upon this Splendid monument of his thrift and industry, realize also that in the vast accumulation of wealth represented here, there is not one dishonest dollar.
