La grossesse, état physiologique particulier, comporte des risques qu'un professionnel de santé, tel le pharmacien d'officine doit savoir identifier, qu'ils soient médicamenteux, chimiques (alcool, tabac, drogues), infectieux ou qu'ils proviennent de pathologies chroniques préexistantes à celle-ci. Il pourra conseiller la femme enceinte sur son hygiène de vie, mais également sur le traitement des " petits maux de la grossesse ". Il devra la mettre en garde contre l'automédication, pratique de plus en plus courante, car de nombreux médicaments disponibles en libre accès sont potentiellement dangereux pour le fœtus. Si l'homéopathie semble la plus indiquée au cours de la grossesse, l'aromathérapie et la phytothérapie sont à utiliser avec prudence. En effet, ces médecines considérées comme " douces " par le grand public comportent des effets toxiques non négligeables. Cependant, il ne devra pas l'inciter à se sous-traiter, car des symptômes qui peuvent sembler bénins dans la population générale (fièvre, infection urinaire) peuvent être fatals pour son fœtus. Un juste équilibre doit être trouvé et cette thèse peut servir de support aux pharmaciens d'officine.
