But, this remarkable capability of hers, doesn’t work for two people. To put it in her style: First, the one whom she can never help – Herself! And two, the other whom she will never help – Me! And the reason is that I love her but she loves him. But still, ours is an unusual tale of love because there is a difference! If my love is unconditional, hers is obsessive. If mine is pure, hers is truthful. If mine is for happiness, hers is for selflessness. If mine is love, hers is respect. Not knowing what to do, one day I asked her, “Everyone has a dad; what’s so special about yours?” She retorted, “Everyone has a boyfriend; what’s so special about you?” I’m still thinking about that! Can you help me with this girl, she’s – Pretty, Pragmatic but Problematic!

Book Description
Trained in the German tradition, Rolf Knierim is a scholar who has made many significant contributions to the ongoing discussion of form criticism, tradition history, and theology. He is also a passionate and charismatic teacher and a widely respected author and editor who has served the scholarly world most visibly in his role as coeditor of the Forms of the Old Testament Literature commentary series. Problems in Biblical Theology is an erudite collection of twenty four essays produced to honor Knierim's contribution to the study of biblical theology. It also stands in its own right as a vade mecum of current trends in biblical scholarship. Written by an international array of respected scholars--Knierim's colleagues, former students, and fellow commentators--this volume includes detailed exegetical studies, discussions of theological methods and approaches from a variety of standpoints, and efforts at relating Old Testament exegesis, theology, and hermeneutics to current interests in social scientific methods of interpretation or postmodern thought. In all, the breadth of interests found in this volume reflects the intellectual vitality and passion that Knierim himself has brought to the discipline. A biographical narrative written by Hildegard Knierim and a foreword by James M. Robinson provide additional insight into the historical and social contexts within which Knierim's work has unfolded.

ISBN: 3030564371
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
Together with the volume “Inquiries in philosophical pragmatics: Linguistic and theoretical issues,” this book provides a journey through the more recent developments of pragmatics, considering both its philosophical and linguistic nature. This first volume is devoted to the theoretical models developed from a philosophical perspective, including both the newest advances of the classical theories and approaches, and pioneering and interdisciplinary ideas proposed to face the challenges of the fields and areas of practice and analysis. The topics investigated, which include implicatures, reference, presupposition, speech acts, metaphor, relevance, and common ground, represent the core of the state of the art in philosophical pragmatics. Research on these matters have been continuously changing the way that we can look at them. This book serves as a collection of works from the most eminent authors who represent the theoretical developments of the approaches that defined this field, together with the new philosophical insights coming from more applied disciplines such as argumentation, discourse analysis, or linguistics. The combination of these two perspectives provides a unique outline of the current research in pragmatics.

Pragmatism and the Problem of Race

Pragmatism and the Problem of Race PDF Author: Bill E. Lawson
Publisher: Indiana University Press
ISBN: 0253027691
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 251

Book Description
A collection of essays examining a pragmatic approach to racism. How should pragmatists respond to and contribute to the resolution of one of America’s greatest and most enduring problems? Given that the most important thinkers of the pragmatist movement—Charles S. Peirce, William James, John Dewey, and George Herbert Mead—said little about the problem of race, how does their distinctly American way of thinking confront the hardship and brutality that characterizes the experience of many African Americans in this country? In twelve thoughtful and provocative essays, contemporary American pragmatists connect ideas with action and theory with practice to come to terms with this seemingly intractable problem. Exploring themes such as racism and social change, the value of the concept of race, the role of education in ameliorating racism, and the place of democracy in dealing with the tragedy of race, the voices gathered in this volume consider how pragmatism can focus new attention on the problem of race. Contributors are Michael Eldridge, Eddie S. Glaude, Jr., Judith M. Green, D. Micah Hester, Donald F. Koch, Bill E. Lawson, David E. McClean, Gregory F. Pappas, Scott L. Pratt, Alfred E. Prettyman, John R. Shook, Paul C. Taylor, and Cornel West.

Pragmatic Meaning and Cognition

Pragmatic Meaning and Cognition PDF Author: Sophia S. A. Marmaridou
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027250871
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 335

Book Description
This book provides a good overview of philosophical and cognitive approaches to language use and meaning. A synthesis of such approaches leads to a dynamic concept of pragmatic meaning which is on the one hand grounded in cognition and motivated by linguistic and cultural convention and, on the other, creates a framework for studying the interactive and social dimensions of the development of meaning in linguistic communication. Through an experientialist approach based on connectionist models, the author shows that by internalizing pragmatic meaning people become social agents who reproduce, challenge or change their social parameters during interaction.Pragmatic Meaning and Cognition is suitable as a course book in Pragmatics and Semantics and of interest to those concerned with cognitive models and dynamic and social aspects of linguistic communication.

Reading the Dead Sea Scrolls

Reading the Dead Sea Scrolls PDF Author: George J. Brooke
Publisher: Society of Biblical Lit
ISBN: 1589839021
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 309

Book Description
The Dead Sea Scrolls, which have long captured the public imagination, are now all available in principal editions and accessible translations. This book addresses the next stage in their analysis by raising questions about how they should be read and studied. The essays collected here illustrate two approaches. First, some essays argue that traditional methods of studying ancient texts need to be refined and broadened in the light of the Scrolls. The volume thus contains studies on text criticism, literary traditions, lexicography, historiography, and theology. Second, the book also argues that innovative methods of study, applied fruitfully in other areas, now also need to be applied to the Scrolls, such as studies that consider the relevance for the Scrolls of deviance theory, cultural memory, hypertextuality, intertextuality, genre theory, spatial analysis, and psychology. Many of the examples in these studies relate to how authoritative scripture was handled and appropriated by the groups that gathered the Scrolls together in the caves at and near Qumran, so some of the same texts are analyzed from several different perspectives.
