Carolina, in the House of Representatives, February 19, 1850 He had long before the introduction oflhhis resolutions of compromise left the Somh, without doubt, as to his views of their rights in the territory acquired from Mexico. In a letter addressed to the free;soil convention at Cleveland in June last, he fully disclosed his opposition to the introduc tion of slaves into that territory, either by private enterprise or the authority of Congress. _'thus giving the weight of his name and. Influence'to close forever all that rich domain against his fellow-citizens, of the South. His resolutions ostensibly for'compromise demand a gratuitous concession altogether by the South of all, enhance more. Once before, the South gave up all that was asked, and now with a scheme'of pacification'pre sented by a statesman who identifies himself with the proviso'party in fact if not in name, we are again required to give up all that is demanded for an empty declaration about the District and fugi tive slaves, and the migration of slaves from State to State - rights already secured by the' Consti lation but ruthlessly invaded. We 'must give up the territory for the consideration. Of the North in acknowledging rights which are plainly guaranteed by the bond of Union.
