Strengthening the Linkages Between the Sciences and the Mathematical Sciences
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309069475
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 134
Book Description
Over three hundred years ago, Galileo is reported to have said, "The laws of nature are written in the language of mathematics." Often mathematics and science go hand in hand, with one helping develop and improve the other. Discoveries in science, for example, open up new advances in statistics, computer science, operations research, and pure and applied mathematics which in turn enabled new practical technologies and advanced entirely new frontiers of science. Despite the interdependency that exists between these two disciplines, cooperation and collaboration between mathematical scientists and scientists have only occurred by chance. To encourage new collaboration between the mathematical sciences and other fields and to sustain present collaboration, the National Research Council (NRC) formed a committee representing a broad cross-section of scientists from academia, federal government laboratories, and industry. The goal of the committee was to examine the mechanisms for strengthening interdisciplinary research between mathematical sciences and the sciences, with a strong focus on suggesting the most effective mechanisms of collaboration. Strengthening the Linkages Between the Sciences and the Mathematical Sciences provides the findings and recommendations of the committee as well as case studies of cross-discipline collaboration, the workshop agenda, and federal agencies that provide funding for such collaboration.

Experiments in International Benchmarking of US Research Fields
Author: Institute of Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309172187
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 316
Book Description
How can the federal government gauge the overall health of scientific researchâ€"as a whole and in its partsâ€"and determine whether national funding adequately supports national research objectives? It is feasible to monitor US performance with field-by-field peer assessments. This might be done through the establishment of independent panels consisting of researchers who work in a field, individuals who work in closely related fields, and research "users" who follow the field closely. Some of these individuals should be outstanding foreign scientists in the field being examined. This technique of comparative international assessments is also known as international benchmarking. Experiments in International Benchmarking of U.S. Research Fields evaluates the feasibility and utility of the benchmarking technique. In order to do this, the report internationally benchmarks three fields: mathematics, immunology, and materials science and engineering, then summarizes the results of these experiments.

Envisioning the Future of Doctoral Education
Author: Chris M. Golde
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0787982350
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 472
Book Description
The development of students as “stewards of the discipline” should be the purpose of doctoral education. A steward is a scholar in the fullest sense of the term—someone who can imaginatively generate new knowledge, critically conserve valuable and useful ideas, and responsibly transform those understandings through writing, teaching, and application. Stewardship also has an ethical and moral dimension; it is a role that transcends a collection of accomplishments and skills. A steward is someone to whom the vigor, quality, and integrity of the field can be entrusted. The most important period of a steward’s formation occurs during formal doctoral education. Envisioning the Future of Doctoral Education is a collection of essays commissioned for the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate. The question posed to the essayists in this volume was, “If you could start de novo, what would be the best way to structure doctoral education in your field to prepare stewards of the discipline?” The authors of the essays are respected thinkers, researchers, and scholars who are experienced with and thoughtful about doctoral education.

Removing Barriers
Author: Jill M. Bystydzienski
Publisher: Indiana University Press
ISBN: 9780253111739
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 364
Book Description
Movement into academic science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields has been slow for women and minorities. Not only are women and minorities underrepresented in STEM careers, there is strong evidence that many academic departments are resistant to addressing the concerns that keep them from entering careers in these fields. In light of recent controversies surrounding these issues, this volume, examining reasons for the persistence of barriers that block the full participation and advancement of underrepresented groups in the sciences and addressing how academic departments and universities can remedy the situation, is particularly timely. As a whole, the volume shows positive examples of institutions and departments that have been transformed by the inclusion of women and recommends a set of best practices for continuing growth in positive directions.

U.S. Doctorates in Mathematics Education
Author: Robert E. Reys
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 9780821845844
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 292
Book Description
Mathematics education in the United States will be shaped at all levels by those who hold doctorates in the field. As professors, they influence the structure and content of university programs in mathematics education, where future teachers are prepared. As scholars, they engage in research and lead us to a deeper and better understanding of the field. This book is a detailed study of doctoral programs in mathematics education. It stems from a national conference sponsored by the National Science Foundation. It involved participants from across the United States, as well as Brazil, Japan, Norway, and Spain, and followed up the work of an earlier conference, published in One Field, Many Paths: U.S. Doctoral Programs in Mathematics Education (Volume 9 in this series). The book, as was the conference, is organized around several major questions, including: What is the core knowledge for doctoral students in mathematics education? What are the important issues and challenges in delivering doctoral programs? What can we learn about doctoral preparation by comparisons with other countries? What effect would accreditation of doctoral programs in mathematics education have on the profession? What next steps need to be addressed now? The book documents the wide range of ideas about doctoral programs in mathematics education and their varied features. It provides readers with current visions and issues concerning doctoral studies in the field and serves as a reminder that establishing stewards of the discipline of mathematics education is a continuing challenge.
