Yavapai County
Author: Rick Sprain
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1439659052
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 128
Book Description
In 1864, Arizona was divided into four counties named after the local Indian communities: Yavapai, Yuma, Mohave, and Pima. Believed to have been the largest county ever created in the lower 48 states at the time, Yavapai encompassed over 65,000 square miles until 1891, when the state was divided into additional counties. Yavapai finally settled to 8,125 square miles. While still a US territory in 1900, Yavapai County had a population just under 13,800 people and was quite remote. Within a few years, postcards started appearing in drugstores, such as Brisley, Timerhoff, Owl, Heit, Corbin and Bork, or Eagle Drug in Prescott and Lynn Boyd or Mitchell in Jerome. Many of the original postcards showcase early mines, towns, and buildings that no longer exist today.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1467144894
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 128
Book Description
For generations, Arizonans have been fascinated with the story of Charles P. Stanton. The alleged crime boss and mass murderer oversaw a reign of terror in the small mining town that bore his name. Driven by greed, he stole ore, swindled mines away from their owners and bribed his way out of justice. Those who crossed him usually ended up dead. But are the legends actually true? Relying on original source material, including court documents and newspapers, Arizona historian Parker Anderson reveals the true story of Stanton for the first time and broaches the possibility that the mysterious Irish Lord may not have been guilty of the terrible crimes that folklore has attributed to him.

Landmark Buildings
Author: Ann Patterson
Publisher: Arizona Highways
ISBN: 9781893860216
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Arizona boasts extraordinary buildings revered for their architectural significance, but for most people, inanimate structures made of brick, glass, and steel come alive only when they learn the human stories behind their conception and construction. Some of the buildings have architectural pedigrees dating to Territorial days and before. Others are remarkable for the role they're playing in the country's urban-design revolution. But all of the buildings profiled in this book have one point in common: they have colorful stories to tell--stories that reveal the essence of Arizona's spirit. Official Arizona State Historian, Marshall Trimble, says a wonderful book on some of Arizona's most famous buildings. For anyone who's ever looked at these classic structures and said, 'If these walls could only talk, ' your wish has been granted.
