Book Description
Prompted by the prediction of Cohen and coworkers that beta carbon nitride may have properties similar to diamond, there have been many attempts to synthesize this hypothetical metastable material. We successfully synthesized this material via epitaxial stabilization using TiN(111) and ZrN(111) as the growth template. The coatings were CN/TiN or CN/ZrN multilayers grown in a dual-magnetron system. The existence of beta carbon nitride in these multilayers has been confirmed with cross-section electron diffraction, Rutherford backscattering, Raman spectroscopy and near-edge x-ray diffraction. Most important, these multilayers exhibit hardness in the 50 GPa, in spite of the large volume fraction (60-70%) of the softer TiN or ZrN component. Attempts to improve the hardness by using TiB2 (which is harder than TiN and ZrN) as the growth template did not work as well because TiB2 was markedly softened by the presence of nitrogen.

Book Description
This work concerned with preparation of Carbon Nitride thin films which is theoretically compete Diamond in hardness. CNx films perpared by the electrolysis of methanol -urea organic solution under different concentrations and applied voltages. This study characterized the structure of the prepared films by FTIR and GIXRD techniques and studied the optical properties of the CNx films by UV-Vis spectrometer. this study aimed at how the nitrogen to carbon ratio in the deposited films affect the structure and the properties of the deposited films.

Transition Metal Carbides and Nitrides
Author: Louis Toth
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 032315722X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 296
Book Description
Refractory Materials, Volume 7: Transition Metal Carbides and Nitrides discusses the developments in transition metal carbide and nitride research. This volume is organized into nine chapters that emphasize the mechanical and superconducting properties of these compounds. The introductory chapters deal with the general properties, preparation techniques, characterization, crystal chemistry, phase relationships, and thermodynamics of transition metal carbides and nitrides. The following chapter highlights the mechanical properties of these compounds, such as elastic and plastic deformation, fracture, strengthening mechanisms, and hardness. The discussion then shifts to specific electrical and magnetic properties, including electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and magnetic susceptibility. A separate chapter is devoted to carbides and nitrides as superconductors. The concluding chapters explore certain theories that explain the mechanisms of band structure and bonding in carbides and nitrides. This volume is of great value to research workers in metallurgy, ceramics, physics, chemistry, and related fields, as well as to advanced students investigating problems concerning high temperature materials or interstitial compounds.
