Book Description
Document from the year 2023 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, , language: English, abstract: This research identifies the causes and effects of construction contract termination in the western Oromia region. Identifying the causes and their effects on projects might prevent their failure in future contracts. However, because building projects are so complicated, their risk is also rather substantial. Ethiopia's construction industry has contributed significantly to poverty reduction, aggregate employment expansion through small and medium firm development, and the job creation through the construction of low-cost housing in Addis Ababa, which has been replicated in other locations. A sizable portion of the country's budget is devoted to fiscal development by financing infrastructure for educational and power development, the construction of railways and road projects that increase the road network's density, and the construction of health projects that increase access to water and sanitation infrastructure. The private sector's contribution to the value-added in a building is also considerable. The private sector invests its money in various fixed assets, including new machinery and equipment and the construction and maintenance of new structures. Ethiopia has also announced successive public procurement reforms to adhere to decent governance principles; reform efforts have been undertaken to encourage reasonable offering for supplier selection and operational delivery of projects within budget and schedule constraints. According to the owner's requirements and within a limited budget it was a very challenging task to achieve a virtuous result by the contractor of the project. The parties that engaged into a contract are responsible to perform and complete it according to the contract's provisions. Failure to comply with such requirements constitutes a breach of the contract, entitling the other party to an appropriate remedy under the contract. In Ethiopia, Terminations of the project are one of the severe problems observed. In the last five years ago, about 3 to 5 projects were terminated in Burayou town municipality public projects such as; Serity Elementary School construction around Gefersa Guju Kebele, Youth center construction around Abdi Nono Kebele, whereas in the Western Oromia; Guliso Wereda G+2 Office building, Ebuntu preparatory school construction, Jimma University Agaro Compass construction, etc. were terminated projects those observed yet. Thus, the perceived problem is to be solved by concerning such issues within a current situation.

Public Administration in Ethiopia
Author: Bacha Kebede Debela
Publisher: Leuven University Press
ISBN: 946270256X
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 703
Book Description
Building an effective, inclusive, and accountable public administration has become a major point of attention for policymakers and academics in Ethiopia who want to realise sustainable development. This first handbook on Ethiopian Public Administration is written by Ethiopian academics and practitioner-academics and builds on PhD studies and conference papers, including studies presented at the meetings of the Ethiopian Public Administration Association (EPAA), established in 2016. Public Administration in Ethiopia presents a wide range of timely issues in four thematic parts: Governance, Human Resources, Performance and Quality, and Governance of Policies. Each of the individual chapters in this volume contributes in a different way to the overarching research questions: How can we describe and explain the contexts, the processes and the results of the post-1990 politico-administrative reforms in Ethiopia? And what are the implications for sustainable development? This book is essential for students, practitioners, and theorists interested in public administration, public policy, and sustainable development. Moreover, the volume is a valuable stepping stone for PA teaching and PA research in Ethiopia.

Diagnosing Corruption in Ethiopia
Author: Janelle Plummer
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 0821395327
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 448

This is a study of the nature of corruption in Ethiopia. It maps eight key sectors. Social Capital and Subjective Well-Being
Author: Anna Almakaeva
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030758133
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 274
Book Description
This book presents a cross-cultural investigation into the interplay between social capital and subjective well-being. Based on a quantitative analysis of the latest large-N cross-cultural data sets, including the World Value Survey and the European Social Survey, and covering various countries, it offers a comparative perspective on and new insights into the determinants of social capital and well-being. By identifying both universal and culture-specific patterns, the authors shed new light on the spatial and temporal differentiation of social capital and subjective well-being. The book is divided into two main parts: The first discusses mutual trust, religious and cultural tolerance, and pro-social and human values as essential dimensions of social capital. In turn, the second part studies social capital as a source of subjective well-being and life satisfaction. Given its scope, the book will appeal to scholars of sociology, social psychology, political science and economics seeking a deeper understanding of the multi-faceted nature of social capital and well-being.

Workers, Managers, Productivity
Author: Akio Hosono
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811503648
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 337
Book Description
This open access book provides a glimpse into the Japanese management technique known as “Kaizen,” and the ways it has been disseminated around the developing world. The novelty of this book is three-fold: it provides a contextualized view of the mechanisms of initiatives implementing Kaizen in developing countries; compared with productivity studies, it places the relationship between workers and managers at the center of inquiry, reflecting the intent of SDG8 concerning decent work and economic growth; and it provides an overview of the heterogeneity of Kaizen in terms of geography and firm size. This book explores how improving management techniques can support firms’ productivity and quality. Given its wide range of case studies from across Africa, Asia and Latin America, this book will be of value to scholars, policymakers and advocates of sustainable development alike.

Urban Planning and Everyday Urbanisation
Author: Nadine Appelhans
Publisher: transcript Verlag
ISBN: 3839437156
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 235
Book Description
Urbanisation in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, poses challenges to urban living conditions. Despite large scale housing programmes from the side of the government, construction and settling processes have largely remained incremental. Nadine Appelhans focuses on the relation between statutory planning and practices of everyday urbanisation. The findings from Bahir Dar suggest that some mundane regimes of building the city are patronised, while others are considered undesired by policy makers. Based on this insight, the author argues that urban development in Bahir Dar needs to be locally grounded, differentiated and inclusive to avoid further tendencies of segregation.

ISBN: 0821447939
Category : History
Languages : en

Book Description

Ethiopians went to study in universities around the world. They returned with the skills of their education acquired in Europe and America, and at home began to lay the foundations of a new literature and political philosophy. Pioneers of Change in Ethiopia describes the role of these men and women of ideas in the social and political transformation of the young nation and later in the administration of Haile Selassie.

The Transformation of Addis Ababa
Author: Elias Yitbarek Alemayehu
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527522725
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 220
Book Description
Nowhere in Africa is urban development occurring as rapidly as in Ethiopia’s capital city, Addis Ababa, at the present moment. During the last decade and a half, massive construction projects in housing, commercial buildings and infrastructure have transformed the landscape of the city, creating a social experiment that has never been replicated on such a massive scale in Africa. This volume, written by Ethiopian and Finnish experts in urban planning, architecture, geography, and ethnology, documents for the first time Addis Ababa’s process of radical transformation. It asks how the city’s poorest residents are affected by the current urban renewal, and identifies the most important challenges facing the city’s residents as a result. Its conclusions focus on three issues: the livelihoods of low-income residents, their participation in the development of the city, and their social networks of support. This volume also traces out the organic forms of the city’s development. Unlike cities in many other African countries, Addis Ababa emerged with only the thinnest traces of a brief colonial legacy: only five years under Italian occupation in the mid-20th century. The city’s development has eluded many planners and has produced unique indigenous forms of urban living. The book records the current spatial relationships and older architectural forms in the old inner city currently slated for demolition. Numerous maps and illustrations are included to help readers visualize the topics discussed in the volume. The volume will be of interest to anyone interested in Addis Ababa’s history and character, as well as policymakers, urban planners, architects, human geographers, ethnographers and researchers of urban poverty and urban informality.
