Book Description
This report presents the preliminary results of an experimental investigation of electromagnetic properties of an ionized gas induced by a shock wave in a shock tube. The shock velocity has been measured using a microwave technique based on the resonat properties of the tube as a waveguide. Electrostatic measurements have been conducted in the ionized gas; they show that the ionized gas becomes positively charged with respect to the wall of the tube. (Author).

An Experimental Investigation of a Nonequilibrium Corner-Expansion Flow of Ionized Argon

An Experimental Investigation of a Nonequilibrium Corner-Expansion Flow of Ionized Argon PDF Author: Ozer Igra
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Argon
Languages : en
Pages : 131

Book Description
Experiments using a 15-degree corner-expansion flow of ionized argon, induced by a normal shock wave in a 4 in x 7 in hypervelocity shock tube, have yielded values of the recombination rate constant as a function of temperature and the variation of the plasma flow quantities with distance from the corner. The data were obtained by using mainly a Mach-Zehnder interferometer which had a nine inch diameter field of view. The interferometer had a dual frequency laser light source and was driven by either a ruby or neodymium rod. The theoretically predicted values for three-body, electron-ion-electron collisional recombination rate are in good agreement with those measured gasdynamically in a well defined flow. The measured flow quantities substantiate a previous analysis based on the method of characteristics. (Author).

An Experimental Investigation of Normal Shock Wave Velocity Distribution Functions in Mixtures of Argon and Helium

An Experimental Investigation of Normal Shock Wave Velocity Distribution Functions in Mixtures of Argon and Helium PDF Author: Laurence Neil Harnett

Book Description
The electron beam-spectroscopic technique developed by Muntz for measuring simple one-dimensional moments of helium velocity distribution functions was extended for use with argon. Measurements were made on argon-helium gas mixture normal shock waves at low Mach numbers. Intensity versus wavelength profiles of single spectral lines for each gas were determined at fixed points within the shock waves with a Fabry-Perot interferometer. Lines of sight both perpendicular and parallel to the flow direction were chosen. By using appropriate calibration functions, the effect of Doppler broadening on the line structure was isolated from all other sources of line broadening, and in this way curves of parallel and perpendicular temperature for each gas as functions of position were constructed. Macroscopic velocities were measured by determining the blue shift in the line profiles when the line of sight shifted from the perpendicular to the parallel direction. The data thus obtained provided detailed information on the variation of species velocities and parallel and perpendicular temperatures within the shock waves. These results were then compared with existing theories and other experimental results. (Author).

Experimental Study on the Ionization of Argon Gas in a Non-Equilibrium State Behind Reflected Shock Waves

Experimental Study on the Ionization of Argon Gas in a Non-Equilibrium State Behind Reflected Shock Waves PDF Author: K. Terao

Book Description
The electron temperature, the density and the ion temperature in argon gas behind reflected shock waves were measured by a laser light scattering method, while the gas temperature was measured by the spectroscopic method. The values of these three temperatures are different from each other during a certain period after arrival of the reflected shock front. Both the electron and ion temperatures are much higher than the theoretical gasdynamic temperature. The ionization rate is also much higher than that in the equilibrium state, but the measured gas temperature is lower than the theoretical one. These results suggest that the argon gas is in a non-equilibrium state during the first period.
