This book provides the first comprehensive and detailed study of the deities and cults of the important Greek island-state of Aigina from the Geometric to Classical periods (800-400 BCE). It rests on a thorough first-hand reconsideration of the archaeological, epigraphic and literary evidence. The development of the local cults is reconstructed, along with their interrelationships and how they responded to the social needs of the Aiginetans. Revising other recent models of interpretation, the author proposes a distinctive approach, informed by anthropology and social theory, to the study of the religious life of the ancient Greeks. On this basis, she uses the case of Aigina to explore fundamental issues such as the nature and variety of local religious worlds and their relationship to the panhellenic concepts and practices of Greek religion.

The island of Aigina has often played a key role in the history of Greece. The well-known temple of Aphaia, having been in existence since the Late Archaic Period of the Iron Age, was preceded 1100 years, by a Doric temple on the same site. The publication is focused particularly on those early days. Terracotta-statues and other finds point to a major Mycenean cultural and religious centre on the east terrace of Aiginia, the highest point on the island, upon which, in the Archaic and Classic Periods, the altar was located. The book is divided into a catalogue of finds, (terracottas, pottery, animal-shaped rhyta, and chariots), an investigation into the presence of a bronze-age cult, a look at the nature of the deity »Kourothropos«, an elaboration on the substantiated bronze-age cult, a historical summary and an appendix.

Since its arrival at the British Museum in 1891, the Aigina Treasure - a group of Greek Bronze Age gold jewellery and other objects that is believed to come from the island of Aigina - has been shrouded in mystery and speculation. The many uncertainties about the Treasure include: its place of origin; whether all the objects are from the same findspot; whether it should be considered as a homogenous group. Through examination of stylistic elements and comparison with objects from other collections, the contributors to this volume variously argue for the Treasures possible Minoan, Mycenaean, Near Eastern and Egyptian connections. Major discoveries in the field have been made since Reynold Higgins' 1979 publication on the Treasure, including the excavation of a warrior shaft grave in Aigina in 1981. While "corridor houses" such as the House of the Tiles at Lerna have provoked widespread discussion about the origins of social stratification in Greece, few settlements of the Early Bronze Age (ca. 3100 to 2000 B.C.) have been thoroughly excavated. The results of two related fieldwork projects are presented: a brief salvage excavation at Plakari (a Final Neolithic site near the modern town of Karystos) and a survey of prehistoric sites on the Paximadi peninsula (the western arm of the Karystos bay), both located in southern Euboea. These ventures were part of the larger mission of the Southern Euboea Exploration Project (SEEP), a multidisciplinary research program dedicated to the study of the Karystian past and which maintained a presence in southern Euboea for over 25 years. These projects have found that, contrary to what archaeologists once believed, southern Euboea was hardly an uninhabited and isolated region in prehistory. The inhabitants actively participated in the expanded maritime and social landscape that characterized the later Neolithic and Early Bronze Age in the Aegean, taking part in exchange networks of stone, ceramics, marble figurines and vessels, and possibly agricultural goods and metalwork.
