This book reviews statistical exciton model of nuclear reactions, and how it is used to calculate Preequilibrium Emission (PE) spectra and reaction cross-sections at energies about 80 MeV. Numerical calculations are made for a two-component system, for (N, N) reactions with Fe-54, Fe-56, Rh-103, and Bi-209 nuclei. Two contributions to the existing model are made: The development of a complete and analytical solution to calculate the state density of excited states based on the one-component non-Equidistant Spacing Model (non-ESM). Also, a simple numerical approach to solve the master equation at energies less than 80 MeV is presented. A variety of quantities required during PE calculation, such as the state density of the excited states, the effective matrix element of the specified reaction, the occupation probability of exciton states, and others are discussed and numerically calculated using a library of MATLAB codes written for this purpose. PE spectra for selected reactions are numerically calculated and compared with earlier calculations.

Recent developments of the Cascade-Exciton Model (CEM) of nuclear reactions are described. The improved cascade-exciton model as implemented in the code CEM97 differs from the CEM95 version by incorporating new approximations for the elementary cross sections used in the cascade, using more precise values for nuclear masses and pairing energies, using corrected systematics for the level-density parameters, and several other refinements. We have improved algorithms used in many subroutines, decreasing the computing time by up to a factor of 6 for heavy targets. We describe a number of further improvements and changes to CEM97, motivated by new data on isotope production measured at GSI. This leads us to CEM2k, a new version of the CEM code. CEM2k has a longer cascade stage, less preequilibrium emission, and evaporation from more highly excited compound nuclei compared to earlier versions. CEM2k also has other improvements and allows us to better model neutron, radionuclide, and gas production in ATW spallation targets. The increased accuracy and predictive power of the code CEM2k are shown by several examples. Further necessary work is outlined. Calculations of particle energy spectra resulting from the photonuclear reactions at energies below the meson production threshold have been carried out in the framework of combining the pre-equilibrium exiton model and the quasi-deuteron model. A 2p-2h initial state in the exciton model is assumed because in the energy region above giant resonance the quasi-deuteron absorption is the dominant process. With these combined models, the subsequent secondary interactions of the emerging particle with the rest of the nucleus following the initial photon-nucleus interaction are appropriately taken into account. The experimental difference energy spectra of fast photoneutrons from several elements (Al, Cu, In, Sn, Ta, Pb, Bi and U) at bremsstrahlung energies of 55 and 85 MeV and the photoproton energy spectra from 12C at bremsstrahlung energy 110 MeV were compared with the theoretical predictions. General agreements in both spectral shapes and cross sections are obtained. The relative yields of the reactions (.gamma., xn) resulting from monoenergetic photons on 127I at 50, 100 and 150 MeV are also predicted reasonably well by the combined models together with the conventional evaporation theory.
