This thesis analyzes the relationship between entry-level variables available to the Office of Admissions and plebe summer attrition at the United States Naval Academy (USNA). The study used independent samples t-tests and linear regression analysis to analyze the effects of individual variables on plebe summer attrition and also used binary logistic regression to develop an overall predictive model of plebe summer attrition. Analysis was conducted on the USNA classes that completed plebe summer from 1995-2002 (N = 9,554). The results of this study indicate the highest plebe summer attrition is attributed to majority females, females in general and midshipmen who exceed the limits of the height/weight table and are not recruited athletes. The lowest plebe summer attrition rates are found among children of service academy graduates, recruited varsity athletes, summer seminar attendees, minority males and older midshipmen. This study summarizes the results and also offers recommendations to the Naval Academy and for future research.

Additionally, the addition of the MBTI and PHQ improved the predictive ability of the admissions formula for two of the four attrition variables modeled. The model was most effective in predicting voluntary attrition. Recommendations are made regarding the United States Naval Academy admissions policy and for future research in the subject area.

The attrition rate at the Naval Academy is higher for minority vs. not minority students. This thesis examines the predictors of minority attrition at the Naval Academy. Three categories of predictor variables were examined: gender, academic measures, and MBTI personality type. Specifically, the study focuses on the theories of college student attrition based on data from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, as well as traditional civilian universities. Data obtained from the Naval Academy's Institutional Research were analyzed. Results of the quantitative analysis show that the standardized test used in the admissions process (SAT) held little predictive value when examining minority attrition. A major finding drawn from Chi Square analysis of the Myers- Briggs Personality Type Indicator revealed that several active personality types did better in terms of persistence at the Naval Academy. Recommendations addressed several areas of possible improvement and proposed further research regarding minority attrition.

Specifically, the research attempts to identify characteristics that may signal a student's propensity to attrite from school. The United States Naval Academy is the premier source of officers for the Naval service. It is a four-year total immersion educational experience designed to develop midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically and prepare them for service as either a Naval or Marine Corps officer. The Fourth-Class Indoctrination (Plebe Summer) program is the first military training evolution for most members of the incoming plebe class. Evaluated in this research are the objectives, outcomes, outcome indicators, data collection procedures, and benchmarks applied to the Plebe Summer program. The research indicates that a performance measurement and outcome management system can assist Naval Academy leaders in improving the quality of the Plebe Summer program.

A selection composite, the Candidate Multiple, was studied for revision to find an optimal combination of present and experimental predictors. Data from three Naval Academy classes (1975-1977) were used to determine and cross validate regression weights that best predict the following criteria of success at the Academy: (1) Cumulative quality point ratio (CQPR), (2) Cumulative military aptitude rating (CMAR), (3) Choice of major (MAJOR), (4) Voluntary resignation (VR), and (5) All attrition (ATT). Zero-order validities were computed against each of the five criteria for each of seven predictors. Two composites of almost equal value were developed that exceeded the prediction obtained with the current composite.
