Book Description
The aerodynamic information needed for preliminary design of tactical missiles has always been obtained through the combined use of theory and experiments. In regard to the static aerodynamics this has resulted in a prediction capability that often is satisfactory for preliminary design. However, the vehicle dynamics cannot be predicted with the same confidence, especially not at the high angles of attack where high performance missiles often must operate. In this case we are still dependent upon continuous efficient interaction between theoretical and experimental methods. The paper delineats the limitations of both methods and describes how to circumvent them in order to predict tactical missile dynamics over the required range of operational parameters. (JES).

Tactical Missile Design
Author: Eugene L. Fleeman
Publisher: AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics)
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 298
Book Description
This is the first textbook offered for tactical missile design. It is oriented toward the needs of aerospace engineering students, missile engineers, and missile program managers. It is intended to provide a basis for including tactical missile design as part of the aerospace engineering curriculum, providing new graduates with the knowledge they will need in their careers. The author's decades of experience in the development of tactical missiles and their technologies is presented in an integrated handbook method for missile design. It uses simple closed-form analytical expressions that are physics-based to provide insight into the primary driving parameters. The text also provides example calculations of rocket-powered and ramjet-powered baseline missiles, typical values of missile parameters, examples of the characteristics of current operational missiles, discussion of the enabling subsystems and technologies of tactical missiles, and the current/projected state of the art of tactical missiles. Included with the text is a CD-ROM containing electronic versions of the figures; 15 videos showing examples of loading missiles, pilot actions, flight trajectories, countermeasures, etc.; and configuration sizing methods.

Prediction of Dynamic Derivatives
Author: Heinz Fuchs
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 19
Book Description
The prediction methodology of dynamic derivatives is presented as derived from semiempirical calculation procedures like 'USAF Stability and Control Datcom' in combination with some modifications necessary for tactical missile configurations at higher angles-of-attack. The main subject is the longitudinal stability derivatives and the roll damping derivativum. A comparison of theoretical and experimental results is presented where different dynamic wind tunnel test equipments are explained including the data evaluation theory. Some aspects of modification of the present linear data evaluation method to nonlinear terms at high angles-of-attack are shown with an example of a fighter aircraft configuration using the MOD test rig in the Dornier wind tunnel. Guided missiles, Aerodynamics. (JES).
