Gibson and Lo (1961) compressibility parameters a and b for an organic soil can be determined from the organic content and the current pressure using the model presented by Gunaratne et al. (1998). These parameters, however, were developed based on results of laboratory one-dimensional consolidation tests and are valid for the K0 state. Researchers such as Edil et al. (1984) have found that the experimentally determined values of b in particular are larger for field situations. Therefore, the compressibility parameters have to be modified to predict field settlement under surcharges. This paper describes an extended model that addresses this issue and demonstrates how the laboratory-based b value can be corrected for field loading conditions. Finally, results of a full-scale, instrumented field settlement study of organic soil are shown to correlate well with the predictions of the extended model.

The formation of an alluvial clay deposit normally goes through sedimentation and consolidation. While the bottom portion is undergoing self-weight consolidation, sedimentation continues to take place at the top. However, the compression behavior of such deposits upon loading is not well understood.This book describes the compression behavior of ultra-soft soil upon additional load application. Various types of laboratory compression tests suitable for this type of soil are discussed, such as tests using small- and large-scale consolidometers, hydraulic Rowe cells under different drainage conditions, constant rate of loading and constant rate of strain tests. It also explains how to determine the transition point, which differentiates the two distinct behaviors between slurry state and soil state deformation. Methods to determine the compression indices and coefficients of consolidation at different stress ranges, which are required for the prediction of magnitude of settlement and time rate of settlement, are developed. An equation for predicting settlement of ultra-soft soil in both the slurry and soil stages is elaborated upon. These proposed methods of characterization or analyses — which are validated against published data, laboratory measurements and a case study — serve as useful tools for designing and constructing embankments and for carrying out land reclamation on ultra-soft soil.

The models for each classification have varying degrees of accuracy. The correlations were tested through a series of field tests, settlement analysis, and comparison to known site settlement. The first analysis incorporates developed correlations for C[subscript r], and the second utilizes measured C[subscript c] and C[subscript r] for each soil layer. The predicted settlements from these two analyses were compared to the measured settlement taken in close proximity. Upon conclusion of the analyses, the results indicate that settlement predictions applying a rule of thumb equating C[subscript c] to C[subscript r], accounting for elastic settlement, and using a conventional influence zone of settlement, compares more favorably to measured settlement than that of predictions using measured compressibility index(s). Accuracy of settlement predictions is contingent on a thorough field investigation.
