Precise Measurement of the K - to Pi -E E- Decay

Precise Measurement of the K - to Pi -E E- Decay PDF Author:

Book Description
A sample of 7253 K{sup ±} 2![pi]{sup ±}ee−([gamma]) decay candidates with 1.0% background contamination has been collected by the NA 48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, which allowed a precise measurement of the decay properties. The branching ratio in the full kinematic range was measured to be BR = (3.11 {+-} 0.12) x 10−7, where the uncertainty includes also the model dependence. The shape of the form factor W(z), where z = (M{sub ee}/M{sub K})2, was parameterized according to several models, and, in particular, the slope [delta] of the linear form factor W(z) = W0(1 + [delta]z) was determined to be [delta] = 2.32 {+-} 0.18. A possible CP violating asymmetry of K+ and K− decay widths was investigated, and a conservative upper limit of 2.1 x 10−2 at 90% CL was established.

A New Measurement of the Pi0 Radiative Decay Width

Book Description
High precision measurements of the differential cross sections for $\pi^0$ photoproduction at forward angles for two nuclei, $^{12}$C and $^$Pb, have been performed for incident photon energies of 4.9 - 5.5 GeV to extract the ${\pi^0 \to \gamma\gamma}$ decay width. The experiment was done at Jefferson Lab using the Hall~B photon tagger and a high-resolution multichannel calorimeter. The ${\pi^0 \to \gamma\gamma}$ decay width was extracted by fitting the measured cross sections using recently updated theoretical models for the process. The resulting value for the decay width is $\Gamma{(\pi^0 \to \gamma\gamma)} = 7.82 \pm 0.14 ~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.17 ~({\rm syst.}) ~{\rm eV}$. With the 2.8\% total uncertainty, this result is a factor of 2.5 more precise than the current PDG average of this fundamental quantity and it is consistent with current theoretical predictions.

Book Description
The authors report on a new measurement of the branching ratio B(K{sub L} → [pi]°[gamma][gamma]) using the KTeV detector. They reconstruct 1982 events with an estimated background of 608, that results in B(K{sub L} → [pi]°[Gamma][gamma]) = (1.29 ± 0.03{sub stat} ± 0.05{sub syst}) x 10−6. They also measure the parameter, a{sub V}, which characterizes the strength of vector meson exchange terms in this decay. They find a{sub V} = -0.31 ± 0.05{sub stat} ± 0.07{sub syst}. These results utilize the full KTeV data set collected from 1997 to 2000 and supersede earlier KTeV measurements of the branching ratio and a{sub V}.

Book Description
Abstract: The Standard Model is the best current description of fundamental interactions and particles; however, the Standard Model has certain shortcomings which have driven particle physicists for the last 30 years to search for phenomena which provide evidence for the next theory beyond the Standard Model. To this end, using the BaBar detector, we search for evidence of the rare decay D* -> D0[pi];D0->[gamma][gamma]. The branching fraction of this decay is enhanced up to 200 times the standard model prediction in certain beyond-the-Standard-Model theories. A measurement of a significant branching fraction would provide evidence for a new theory of particle physics. We describe our search for this rare decay and an improved measurement of the associated decay, B(D0-> [pi]0 [pi]0) using an integrated luminosity corresponding to 470.5 fb−1 of e e− data collected by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric ee− collider at SLAC from 1999-2007. We place an upper limit of B(D0->[gamma][gamma]) 2.51 X 10−6 at 90% confidence level and find B(D0-[pi]0[pi]0) = (8.4 " 0.1 " 0.4 " 0.3) X 10−4.

Book Description
This thesis describes a search for the rare decay K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma} using data from the KTeV experiment, using the topology K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sub D}{sup 0}{gamma} (where {pi}{sub D}{sup 0} {yields} {gamma}e{sup +}e{sup -}). Due to Bose statistics and the real nature of the photon, the K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma} decay can proceed at lowest order only by the Cp conserving direct emission of an E2 photon. The decay vanishes to O(p{sup 4}) in chiral perturbation theory and is a probe of the theory to the sixth order. The primary background to this decay consists of K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sub D}{sup 0} events with one lost photon. The upper limit for the decay K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma} presented in this thesis is 2.32 x 10{sup -7} at the 90% confidence level. This upper limit was derived from both 1997 and 1999 data, using a blind analysis. The upper limit was derived from a Feldman-Cousins method, based on a weighted total of 0.53 data events in the signal region with an expected K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sub D}{sup 0} background of 0.37 {+-} 0.28 events. The previous upper limit for this decay was 5.6 x 10{sup -6} at the 90% confidence level.
