Excerpt from Hymns for Public and Private Worship, and Sunday Schools The hymns are classed into twenty-seven subjects, in alphabetical order, beginning with activity and ending with warning. By this arrangement any of the subjects can be quickly found without referring to the index. The hymns are headed with texts of Scripture, with reference to book, chapter and verse. Both hymns and tunes are indexed according to the number of the hymns, - the tunes agreeing with the hymns immediately following them. All the hymns fol lowing a tune are of the same metre. The beginning of a tune, found at the bottom of some of the right hand pages, is numbered the same as the full tune, which is always found toward the first part of the book. The singer who is not fully acquainted with a tune can see, at the same time, a hymn on the right hand page, and the tune on the left, holding the intervening pages directly toward him.
