Combating Desertification with Plants

Combating Desertification with Plants PDF Author: D. Pasternak
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461513278
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 451

Book Description
The conference "Combating Desertification with Plants" was held in Beer Sheva, Israel, from November 2-5, 1999, and was attended by 70 participants from 30 countries and/or international organisations. Desertification - the degradation of soils in drylands - is a phenomenon occurring in scores of countries around the globe. The number of people (in semiarid regions) affected by the steady decline in the productivity of their lands is in the hundred millions. The measures required to halt and reverse the process of desertification fall into many categories - policy, institutional, sociological-anthropological, and technical. Although technical "solutions" are not currently in vogue, the conference organizers felt that perhaps the pendulum had swung too far in the direction of "participatory approaches." Hence IPALAC - The International Program for Arid Land Crops - whose function is to serve as a catalyst for optimizing the contribution of plant germplasm to sustainable development in desertification-prone regions - felt the time was opportune for providing a platform for projects where the "plant-driven" approach to development finds expression. Some 45 papers were delivered at the conference, falling into the categories of this volume: Overview, Potential Germplasm for Arid Lands, Introduction, Domestication and Dissemination of Arid Land Plants, Land Rehabilitation, and Mechanisms of Plant Transfer. The conference was funded by UNESCO (Division of Ecological Sciences), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, and MASHAV, Israel's Center for International Development Cooperation.

Savage Fortune

Savage Fortune PDF Author: Lyn Boothman
Publisher: Boydell & Brewer
ISBN: 1843831996
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 338

Book Description
"The eighty-three documents presented here, varied in length and character, are not all concerned with Suffolk, but they are all connected with the eventful lives of Sir Thomas (later Viscount) Savage and his wife Elizabeth Savage (later Countress Rivers), who married in 1602 and whose homes included Melford Hall." "Thomas and Elizabeth both inherited considerable estates in Suffolk, Essex and Cheshire. Within a tight circle of aristocratic Catholics, they became prominent servants of the royal family during the reigns of James I and Charles I. After Thomas's death in 1635, Elizabeth remained an intimate of the queen, but her two houses of St. Osyth's and Melford Hall were sacked in 1642, and she remained chronically short of money up to her death in 1651." "The central document is a remarkable inventory of 1635-6, taken after Thomas died, listing the contents of Melford Hall in Suffolk, Rocksavage in Cheshire and a town house on Tower Hill in London."--BOOK JACKET.

The Diversity of Life

The Diversity of Life PDF Author: Edward O. Wilson
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company
ISBN: 9780393319408
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 468

Book Description
This classic by the distinguished Harvard entomologist tells how life on earth evolved and became diverse, and now, how diversity and life are endangered by us, truly. While Wilson contributed a great deal to environmental ethics by calling for the preservation of whole ecosystems rather than individual species, his environmentalism appears too anthropocentric: "We should judge every scrap of biodiversity as priceless while we learn to use it and come to understand what it means to humanity." And: "Signals abound that the loss of life's diversity endangers not just the body but the spirit." This reprint of the 1992 Belknap Press publication contains a new foreword.
