Liturgies from Below

Liturgies from Below PDF Author: Claudio Carvalhaes
Publisher: Abingdon Press
ISBN: 1791007368
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 480

Book Description
It’s been said that prayer is the vocabulary of faith. This book offers a wealth of resources from forgotten places to help us create a new vocabulary for worship and prayer, one that is located amidst the poor and the major issues of violence and destruction around the world today. It is a collection of prayers, songs, rituals, rites of healing, Eucharistic and baptismal prayers, meditations and art from four continents: Asia-Pacific Islands, Africa, Americas, and Europe. Liturgies from Below is the culmination of a project organized by the Council for World Mission (CWM) during 2018-2019. Approximately 100 people from four continents worked with CWM, collaborating to create indigenous prayers and liturgies expressing their own contexts, for sharing with their communities and the rest of the world. The project was called “Re-Imagining Worship as Acts of Defiance and Alternatives in the Context of Empire”. The author and others spent weeks living in each of four communities for several weeks/months, getting to know the people, and then facilitating the people’s own creation of prayers and liturgies. The author, other scholars, pastors, artists, activists and students all came from radically different ethnicities, races, sexualities, churches and Christian theologies. The people in each location were poor, living in very challenging communities, living in oppressive and seemingly hopeless situations. After some time, they wrote prayers and stories of their experience trying to live the Christian faith in utterly abandoned places. What we have here is an immensely rich and varied collection of liturgical sources from various communities dealing with issues of violence, immigration/refugees, drugs, land grabbing, war on the poor, attack on women, militarization, climate change, and so on.

Towards Liturgies that Reconcile

Towards Liturgies that Reconcile PDF Author: Scott Haldeman
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351878506
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 324

Book Description
Towards Liturgies that Reconcile reflects upon Christian worship as it is shaped, and mis-shaped, by human prejudice, specifically by racism. African Americans and European Americans have lived together for 400 years on the continent of North America, but they have done so as slave and master, outsider and insider, oppressed and oppressor. Scott Haldeman traces the development of Protestant worship among whites and blacks, showing that the following exist in tension: African American and European American Protestant liturgical traditions are both interdependent and distinct; and that multicultural communities must both understand and celebrate the uniqueness of various member groups while also accepting the risk and possibility of praying themselves into an integrated body, one new culture.

Praying Together

Praying Together PDF Author: Megan Hill
Publisher: Crossway
ISBN: 1433550547
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 111

Book Description
Nearly all Christians would affirm the centrality of prayer for a healthy Christian life. And yet, for many, prayer is often a challenge, requiring intense personal commitment and self-discipline. However, as Megan Hill points out in Praying Together, our normal approach to prayer leaves out a crucial component: other people. While personal prayer is important, God designed the church to be a community of believers who regularly pray together. Exploring the Bible's rich teaching on what it means to gather at God's throne with one voice, Hill lays a theological foundation for corporate prayer and offers practical guidance for making it a reality—in our families, churches, and communities.

Prayer Changes Things

Prayer Changes Things PDF Author: Beatrice B. Fearon
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1532080816
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 91

Book Description
Prayer is an integral part of a faith-based life. But how does one pray? Prayer may seem like something everyone just knows how to do, but it can be so much more meaningful than repeating basic orisons. And creating a more meaningful prayer life is the subject of author Beatrice Fearon’s Prayer Changes Things: Prayer + the Word of God = Power. For many years, Fearon felt she had been prophetically told she would write a book. Though she tried to do so, she would lose interest and stop writing. Then one day, while at a prayer meeting, someone mentioned people didn’t like to pray openly because they didn’t know how to pray. And with that comment, Prayer Changes Things was born. In its pages, Fearon takes readers through what it takes to have a prayerful life. Using extensive biblical references, she creates an atmosphere in which one feels inspired to pray deeply and sincerely, not just repeat things through rote. Prayer Changes Things: Prayer + the Word of God = Power guides you on the path to find the strength and power one can have only through prayer and a faith-based life. No longer will prayer be a mystery or approached with fear and apprehension. You will have all you need to speak openly and lovingly to God, rather it’s a brief chat with your heavenly Father or a more in-depth conversation.
