The Structure of Language

The Structure of Language PDF Author: Emma L. Pavey
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139488694
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 423

Book Description
Most of the time we communicate using language without considering the complex activity we are undertaking, forming words and sentences in a split second. This book introduces the analysis of language structure, combining both description and theory within a single, practical text. It begins by examining words and parts of words, and then looks at how words work together to form sentences that communicate meaning. Sentence patterns across languages are also studied, looking at the similarities and the differences we find in how languages communicate meaning. The book also discusses how context can affect how we structure our sentences: the context of a particular language and its structures, the context of old and new information for us and our addressee(s), and the context of our culture.

Introducing English Grammar

Introducing English Grammar PDF Author: Kersti Borjars
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134671512
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
Answering key questions such as 'Why study grammar?' and 'What is standard English?', Introducing English Grammar guides readers through the practical analysis of the syntax of English sentences. With all special terms carefully explained as they are introduced, the book is written for readers with no previous experience of grammatical analysis. It is ideal for all those beginning their study of linguistics, English language or speech pathology, as well as students with primarily literary interests who need to cover the basics of linguistic analysis. The approach taken is in line with current research in grammar, a particular advantage for students who may go on to study syntax in more depth. All the examples and exercises use real language taken from newspaper articles, non-standard dialects and include excerpts from studies of patients with language difficulties. Students are encouraged to think about the terminology as a tool kit for studying language and to test what can and cannot be described using these tools. This new edition has been fully revised in line with recent research. There is a new chapter on World English, a new glossary and a free website with extensive further reading and answers to the exercises.

Practical Studies in Sentence Analysis

Practical Studies in Sentence Analysis PDF Author: Howard Leslie Lunt
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330400265
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 146

Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Studies in Sentence Analysis "Practical Studies in Sentence Analysis" is a revision and an enlargement of the author's former work, entitled "A Study of the English Sentence," which was published in 1895. In this work was printed for the first time a new method of written (visual) sentence analysis, designed as a substitute for the defective "diagram system" then in vogue. Since that time the writer has taught his scheme of combined oral and written analysis of the English sentence to many classes of pupils and teachers, who have voluntarily given personal testimony to its practical value. The memory of these words of commendation has furnished, for the most part, the author's main motive for organizing in a textbook the results of his past experiences in studying and teaching the functional elements of the English sentence. In no sense is this work to be regarded as a substitute for a textbook on English Grammar, but rather as a supplement to almost any grammar that would serve as a reference book for rules, principles, and definitions. It must be acknowledged that much of the teaching of English grammar has had to do with the recognition and classification of the Parts of Speech, and that no sufficient attention has been given to the classification of unit elements according to their special functions. The importance of sentence analysis has been noted by the New York Board of Regents in an "English Syllabus" in the following terms: "To help the pupil to develop the 'sentence sense' and to grasp the thought of difficult sentences, much of the time given to the study of grammar should be spent in the analysis of sentences just within the limit of his mental ability, such analysis consisting of rapid drill in syntax of words, phrases, and clauses."
