Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Reflections on the Psalms Synopsis of the Books of the Bible. Vol. Ii. Morrish London. When at peace with God, the heart turns back from the Epistles where the work of Christ is unfolded, and all needed to set the soul at rest and peace with God is made known; it turns back to the Gospels to learn the ways, and thoughts and actions of Him who loved us and gave Himself for us. It truns back still - when rightly informed as to the true meaning of the Psalms, - te them, and learns the heart of Christ, and how His sympathies enter into, and give a voice to the exercises of His people's hearts. He learned all this when in divine grace, He entered into that order of suffering, especially at the close of His life on earth, in order to be able to speak a word in season to him who is weary. It learns too the plaint of His own heart, at moments when no human heart could ever fathom the deep waters of anguish His holy soul passed through. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes, Critical, Explanatory, and Practical, on the Book of Psalms, Vol. 1 of 3 It is of more interest to me than it can be to the public to say that I cannot close these labours, continued through so many years of my life, without deep emotion. The very fact that any work of life is ended, however humble or unimportant it may be in itself, is fitted to suggest solemn reflections to a man's own mind. The nature of the work In which I have thus been engaged is such as to give great additional solemnity to these reflections. He undertakes a work of great responsibility, who engages in the task of endeavouring to explain the Word of God, and who may thus give direction to the views, perhaps, of thou sands, ou subjects that may affect their destiny for ever. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes, Critical, Explanatory, and Practical, on the Book of Psalms, Vol. 2 of 3 There is a very marked resemblance between this psalm and the forty-third. They were composed on a similar, if not on the same occasion; and the two might be united so as to constitute one con nected psalm. In fact, they are thus united in thirty-seven codices of Kenni cott, and in nine of De Rossi. The structure of both is the same, though they are separated in most of the He brew 1\iss., in the Septuagint and Latin Vulgate, in the Chaldee Paraphrase, and in the Syriac and Arabic versions. The forty-second psalm consists of two parts, marked by the burden or refrain ln vers. 5 and 11 and if Psalm xliii. Were regarded as a part of the same composition, the two would be divided into three parts, marked by the same burden or refrain, in Ps. Xlii. 5, 11, and xliii. 5. Of these parts the general strue ture is similar, containing (a) an ex pression of trouble, sorrow, despondency; and then (b) a solemn appeal oft e author to his own soul, asking why he should be cast down, and exhorting him self to put his trust in God. Book Description
"One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple." -Psalm 27:4, KJV The Psalms are treasures from those who earnestly sought the face of God. They are honest messages of sorrow, joy, praise, and wisdom from real people who experienced real struggles. In the psalmists' words we see their hearts open before God. In Seeking the Face of God, Martyn Lloyd-Jones unpacks nine passages from the Psalms and weaves them together with the everyday life of the world in which we live. His reflections are practical, powerful, and profound. For those just beginning to study the Psalms as well as those who know them well and wish to consider them from a new angle, this collection of sermons from one of the greatest preachers of the twentieth century will move your mind to greater understanding and your heart to deeper worship.
