Excerpt from Practical Exercises in Elementary Meteorology The advance of meteorology as a school study has been much hampered by the lack of a published outline of work in this subject which may be undertaken during the school years. There are several excellent text-books for more advanced study, but there is no laboratory manual for use in the elementary portions of the science. In many secondary schools some instruction in meteorology is given, and the keeping of meteorological records by the scholars is every year becoming more general. There is yet, however, but little system in this work, and, in consequence, there is little definite result. The object of this book is to supply a guide in the elementary observational and inductive studies in meteorology. This Manual is not intended to replace the text-books, but is designed to prepare the way for their more intelligent use. Simple preliminary exercises in the taking of meteorological observations, and in the study of the daily weather maps, as herein suggested, will lay a good foundation on which later studies, in connection with the textbooks, may be built up. Explanations of the various facts discovered through these exercises are not considered to lie within the scope of this book. They may be found in any of the newer text-books. This Manual lays little claim to originality. Its essential features are based on the recommendations in the Report on Geography of the Committee of Ten. Select the station (between two isobars on any weather map) at which you intend to make your observation. Observe into which of the four sectors (marked right, left, with, against) the wind arrow at the station points. Keep a record of the observation. Tabulate your results according to the following scheme, noting in the first column the date of the map, in the second, third, fourth, and fifth columns the number of winds found blowing with, to the right or left of, and against, the gradient. Excerpt from Elementary Meteorology Those who are already acquainted with the science of meteorology will need no words of mine to show that the greatest share of whatever value this book may contain comes from my having studied and followed the work of the late Professor William Ferrel of Washington. To his remarkable insight and ingenious analysis we owe the best part of the understanding of general atmospheric processes that has yet been reached. Those who here first come to know something of the science of the atmosphere, and who are perhaps thus brought to desire further acquaintance with it, should not fail to study Ferrel's Popular Treatise on the Winds, in which his more mathematical essays are reduced to a simpler form. Yet after Ferrel, an almost equal indebtedness must be acknowledged to Professor Julius Hann of Vienna, from whose broad and accurate studies I have found assistance at every turn. His Klimatologie, the standard work of the kind, and his numerous special articles, have furnished me with much information as well as with many well-defined examples of meteorological conditions and processes. The names of many other meteorologists to whom acknowledgment is due come to mind while revising the pages of this book, which presents the condensed results of my reading, observing and teaching during the last fifteen years. Some of these names are mentioned on the appropriate pages, but in general I have not attempted to make explicit reference to the sources of information that have been consulted, believing that in a school book, as this is primarily intended to be, such references are not of much value, especially as they too commonly lead to sources of information inaccessible in school libraries.
