Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Elementary Algebra This book meets the requirements of the College Entrance Board, and contains, besides, chapters on logarithms and on the application of algebra in science and higher mathematics, as a preparation for technical schools. It has been written, as the title indicates, with the object of making elementary algebra possess more practical value, both in the ordinary and also in the cultural or educational sense of the word. It is written as well for those who do not go to college, as for those who do. A wave of interest in mathematical teaching has swept over the United States during the past five or six years, receiving an impetus from the Perry movement in England. Numerous organizations of teachers have been formed, and quite a literature has been built up in the publications of these societies. The author has studied this literature carefully and utilized its suggestions freely. The whole field of exercises has been eagerly searched for more practical problems, and a considerable number of new ones has been introduced. The belief is expressed that with this training in solving such problems the student will be much more likely to apply his algebra to everyday affairs and in advanced studies than without it. The progress of the student through the formal parts of the subject is made easy and rapid. As far as possible the snags and pitfalls have been removed, and the path has been made plain and open. The algebraic notation is wonderfully compact and shorthandlike, and its complexities should not be forced on young minds too early. Much of the pleasure in the study consists in the easy and facile doing of the work assigned. With the difficult exercises, obscure explanations, and unnecessary definitions cut out, rapid progress can be made. The topics are presented in such a way that in case any are imperfectly developed, or left unfinished in class, the average student can get the help he needs from the book. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Algebra: Second Year Course This book contains a brief review of the fundamental opera tions of algebra followed by a thorough presentation of the topics usually included in the work of the third half year. The material is so arranged that the choice of topics for review or advance study may be easily made. The book contains not only a large number of practical problems but also practical applications of graphs. Material for drill in the manipulation of exponents and radicals will be found in Chapter VII. Great pains have been taken to make the subject of logarithms accessible to beginners. The most difficult part in learning to compute with logarithms is the process of interpolation. Of the various arrangements of logarithmic tables which have been suggested, we have selected the one which renders interpolation easiest. The chapter on logarithms is introduced earlier than usual, on account of the great practical importance of the subject. If desired, it can be taken up later, after Chapter VI. The concept of a function does not receive isolated and abstract treatment; it is pre sented as a fundamental idea in proportion, variation, and graphics. Its connection with problems of everyday life is firmly established. The aims of the First Year Book have been kept in view in the preparation of this text. Emphasis is thrown upon clear ness of exposition and the use of expressions which recall the axiomatic processes involved. Continued stress has been laid upon oral exercises. Several of the practical problems given in the text were suggested by the perusal of an English book, T. Percy Nunn's Exercises in Algebra (including Trigonometry), Part I, 1913. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Algebra In preparing a new algebra for secondary schools, the author has provided a new set of examples throughout the book. These examples have been selected and graded with great care. There are nearly four thousand of them, surely a sufficient number for practice in fixing in the minds of pupils the principles of elementary algebra. At the request of many teachers a sufficiently full treatise on graphs and several pages of exercises in physics have been introduced. The first chapter contains the necessary definitions and illustra tions of the commutative, associative, and distributive laws of algebra. This chapter should be read carefully at first, and later particular attention should be given to the principal definitions. The second chapter treats of simple equations and is designed to lead the beginner to see the advantages of algebraic methods before he encounters negative numbers. Only positive numbers are involved in the first two chapters, and the recognition of the fact that the true nature of subtraction is counting backward, and that the true nature of multiplication is forming the product from the multipli cand in the same way as the multiplier is formed from unity, leads to an easy explanation in the third chapter of all the elementary processes with negative numbers. All the rules of this chapter are illustrated and enforced by examples that involve simple algebraic expressions only. The more common Operations with compound expressions, including resolution into factors and the treatment of fractions, follow the third chapter. The immediate succession Of topics that require similar work is of the greatest importance to the beginner, and it is expected that the exercises in compound expressions will give sufficient practice in the use of symbols. Book Description
Excerpt from An Elementary Algebra for Schools and Academies A very Gradual Advance. Complex subjects have been subdivided as far as possible into their elements, so that the learner may have to take but one step at a time. A Practical Character. There is a continual review and repetition of whatever has been learned. Much more attention than usual has been given to Fractions, as a thorough drill on them is believed to be essential to a full comprehension of Algebraic operations, and a ready facility in performing them. The examples are very numerous, and are all original, so that this book may be used in connection with others, without fear of any other than accidental repetition. Book Description
Excerpt from A Review of Algebra IN most high schools the course in Elementary Algebra is finished by the end of the second year. By the senior year, most students have forgotten many of the principles, and a thorough review is necessary in order to prepare college candi dates for the entrance examinations and for effective work in the freshman year in college. Recognizing this need, many schools are devoting at least two periods a week for part of the senior year to a review of algebra. For such a review the regular textbook is inadequate. From an embarrassment of riches the teacher finds it laborious to select the proper examples, while the student wastes time in searching for scattered assignments. The object of this book is to conserve the time and effort of both teacher and student, by providing a thorough and effective review that can readily be completed, if need be, in two periods a week for a half year. Each student is expected to use his regular textbook in algebra for reference, as he would use a dictionary, to recall a definition, a rule, or a process that he has forgotten. He should be encouraged to think his way out wherever possible, however, and to refer to the textbook only when forced to do so as a last resort. The definitions given in the General Outline should be reviewed as occasion arises for their use. The whole Outline can be profitably employed for rapid class reviews, by covering the part of the Outline that indicates the answer, the method, the example, or the formula, as the case may be. The whole scheme of the book is ordinarily to have a page of problems represent a day's work. This, of course, does not apply to the Outlines or the few pages of theory, which can be covered more rapidly. By this plan, making only a part of the omissions indicated in the next paragraph, the essentials of the algebra can be readily covered, if need be, in from thirty to thirty-two lessons, thus leaving time for tests, even if only eighteen weeks, of two periods each, are allotted to the course.
