Book Description
Power Africa is a Presidential initiative designed to double access to electrical power in sub-Saharan Africa in the next 6 years by producing at least 10,000 megawatts of more efficient, cost effective, and hopefully sustainable electricity generation capacity on the continent. By 2020, this initiative aims to increase electricity access for 20 million new households and commercial entities with a robust mix of on-grid, minigrid, and off-grid solutions; enhance energy resource management capabilities of partner countries; and increase regional cross-border trade. Power Africa can catalyze vast opportunities for the private sector and mobilize private resources to help solve the endemic problem of energy poverty across Africa. The initiative has garnered the support of several large investors, as well as multinational institutions such as the African Development Bank and World Bank, which serve as critical partners for Power Africa.

Empowering Africa

Empowering Africa PDF Author: Lorenzo Colantoni
Publisher: Global Politics and Security
ISBN: 9783034337779
Category : Africa
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Access to electricity is a key factor for the future of the African continent. Energy poverty and lack of universal access to electricity services are, in fact, remarkably hurting human progress in Africa. Today, sub-Saharan Africa hosts 14 percent of the world's population but 60 percent of the world's people without access to electricity: of the more than 1 billion people globally who had no access to electricity, around 600 million lived in the region. In these conditions, many African countries are unable to develop a solid economy or provide basic health and education services to their citizens. Starting from the analysis of present and future economic, demographic, social and technological trends, Empowering Africa offers an in-depth assessment of the current status and of the future prospects of access to electricity in the African continent. The volume describes the main developments in the Africa's electricity sector, addressing the issue both from a regional and a thematic point of view, and attempting to define the key trends of a sector that will necessarily contribute to shape the continent's political, social and economic dynamics for the next decades.

The Future of Africa

The Future of Africa PDF Author: Jakkie Cilliers
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 303046590X
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 429

Book Description
This open access textbook offers a critical introduction to human and economic development prospects in Africa revolving around three questions: where is Africa today, what explains the current state, and, given historical trends and what we know about the world, where do we think the continent will be in 2040? And, a final question: what can we do to create a better tomorrow? It models ambitious progress in health, demographics, agriculture, education, industrialization, technological leapfrogging, increased trade, greater stability, better governance and external support. The book reviews the future of work/jobs, poverty and the impact of climate change. A combined Closing the Gap scenario presents a forecast of what could be possible by 2040. Each chapter suggests which policies might accelerate prospects for each sector. Written in an accessible style, and supported by a range of pedagogical features, this textbook introduces undergraduate and graduate students to the contemporary human and economic development prospects in Africa.

The Future of Energy in Africa

The Future of Energy in Africa PDF Author: Subcommittee on Africa
Publisher: CreateSpace
ISBN: 9781507827024
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 98

Book Description
It is both unfortunate and absolutely unnecessary that more than 1/2 billion Africans, especially in rural areas, live without electricity. Perhaps the great irony is that Africa has more than enough energy capacity to join the rest of the world in utilizing modern technologies that require energy supplies. Approximately 30 percent of global oil and gas discoveries of the past 5 years alone have been in sub-Saharan Africa. Yet, currently, only 290 million out of 914 million Africans have access to electricity. And the total number lacking such access continues to rise. Bioenergy— mainly, fuel, wood, and charcoal—is still a major source of fuel. Hydropower accounts for about 20 percent of total power supply in the region, but less than 10 percent of its estimated potential has been utilized. This hearing today will examine the current and prospective impact of U.S. Government programs, such as Power Africa and Electrify Africa, as well private international energy projects.
