Book Description
This book gives a precise look over first personal pronouns and modality in political discourses of Abdelilah Benkirane on the base of Hallidayian Systemic Functional Grammar from critical perspective of Norman Fairclough. For this importance, the speeches of Abdelilah Benkirane during the campaign for the elections of November 2011 are critically analyzed in order to arrive at a better understanding of the nature of his political discourse. At the end it is concluded that Abdelilah Benkirane uses "we" and "I" the most in his speeches for creating an intimate relationship with his audience. Furthermore, by using different modal auxiliaries especially the frequent use of high value, Benkirane presents his attitudes on the Arab spring and the 20th February movement, which can influence the attitudes and beliefs of his audience.

Language, Power and Ideology

Language, Power and Ideology PDF Author: Ruth Wodak
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027224161
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
The topic of Language and Ideology has increasingly gained importance in the linguistic sciences. The general aim of critical linguistics is the exploration of the mechanisms of power which establish inequality, through the systematic analysis of political discourse (written or oral). This reader contains papers on a variety of topics, all related to each other through explicit discussions on the notion of ideology from an interdisciplinary approach with illustrative analyses of texts from the media, newspapers, schoolbooks, pamphlets, talkshows, speeches concerning language policy in Nazi-Germany, in Italofascism, and also policies prevalent nowadays. Among the interesting subjects studied are the jargon of the student movement of 1968, speeches of politicians, racist and sexist discourse, and the language of the green movement. Because of the enormous influence of the media nowadays, the explicit analysis of the mechanisms of “manipulation”, “suggestion”, and “persuasion” inherent in language or about language behaviour and strategies of discourse are of social relevance and of interest to all scholars of social sciences, to readers in all educational institutions, to analysts of political discourse, and to critical readers at large.

Critical Discourse Analysis and Discourse of Power

Critical Discourse Analysis and Discourse of Power PDF Author: Anwar Elsharkawy
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3668372772
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 39

Book Description
Scientific Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: Excellent with honor, , course: Critical Discourse Analysis, language: English, abstract: The present paper has shown the practical part of CDA according to three scholars, namely they are Norman Fairclough, Ruth Wodak, and Teun van Dijk. Their approaches are somehow different in method and way of interpretation. While Fairclough is brought up on the systemic-functional model of theory and thus often concentrates on rather limited amounts of research material, Wodak turns to sociolinguistics and ethnography with an emphasis on corpus-based research and on work with different approaches with a variety of empirical data as well as background information. However, the notion that language is inherently social remains a key assumption in both approaches. On the other hand, similarly to Fairclough, van Dijk acknowledges three different perspectives; text, discourse practice and sociocultural practice, and emphasizes on the link between textual analysis and sociocultural analysis. However, van Dijk differentiates himself from both Fairclough and Wodak in his understanding of social events or of social institutions and power relations. To van Dijk, social cognitions mediate between micro- and macro-levels of society, between discourse and action, between the individual and the group. Therefore, the focus on social cognition governs the process of analysis.

CDA and PDA Made Simple

CDA and PDA Made Simple PDF Author: Bahaa-eddin M. Mazid
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443871702
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 435

Book Description
CDA and PDA Made Simple cuts many long stories short and encapsulates a long-standing tradition in modern and contemporary linguistics. The theoretical scope of the book encompasses a lengthy review of relevant studies in the area of critical discourse analysis (CDA), and, more broadly, in the areas of power, control, ideology and politics as realized and enacted in discourse. The book also brings together a detailed theoretical background on the main tenets and assumptions, tools and recipes, trends and extensions and critiques and applications of critical and political discourse analysis (PDA). Its analytical focus is predominantly on how ideology and power are linguistically and meta-linguistically realized, specifically through transitivity, modality, metadiscourse and presupposition in some discourse genres in English.

A critical discourse analysis of power and ideology

A critical discourse analysis of power and ideology PDF Author: Anwar Elsharkawy
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3668375526
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 37

Book Description
Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Sociology - Individual, Groups, Society, grade: 4, , course: CDA, language: English, abstract: This paper has shown the relations of critical discourse analysis (CDA) to Power and Ideology, trying to present the most common theories of power, by which the term power can be defined. Though it is difficult to find an agreed definition of power because its concept is essentially contested, all approaches are true and there are general understandings among them: first the operation of power is the ability to get an individual to behave or not to behave in a particular manner and the ability to achieve one's goals while denying others access to the same. Second, modern power is persuasive and manipulative rather than coercive (i.e., using of force), or incentive, such as the explicit issuing of commands, orders, threats or economic sanctions. Third, Power can be ideological, commonsensical, or symbolic, and within these confines, it can operate at a range of different levels: the social, individual, military, state-based, legal, and so on. Fourth, although the process of power may be realized in different ways and in different social environments, the resources of power utilized may not be of the same type. Fifth, some individuals or groups may access or use strategic resources to maintain a position and a status of power over others.

Discourse, Ideology and Specialized Communication

Discourse, Ideology and Specialized Communication PDF Author: Giuliana Garzone
Publisher: Peter Lang
ISBN: 9783039108886
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 508

Book Description
This book approaches the issue of ideology in specialized communication in professional, institutional and disciplinary settings across domains as diverse as law, healthcare, corporate management, migration, NGOs, etc. What unites the contributors is their commitment to a discourse view of language use, i.e., the view that organisational and professional practices are rooted in social, ideological orders, although a variety of perspectives on the exact nature of the relationship between ideology and discourse can be discerned in individual chapters. The acts of interpretation - by participants and analysts alike - are invested in ideology, explicitly or implicitly. This manifest/hidden duality surrounding ideology-in-discourse constitutes the main focus. Challenging the traditional presumption of objectivity, impersonality and non-involvement that has often characterized research on Language for Specific Purposes, this book demonstrates how the specialized communication setting is a critical site where ideology is intrinsically embodied in discursive practices.

Pages : 53

Book Description
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: Excellent, Shaqra University (Faculty of Education), course: CDA, language: English, abstract: In this paper, a historical outline of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) will be presented, and some notions and concepts, such as discourse, critical, text, and semiosis, will be clarified. In doing so, many relationships of CDA to other components such as social structure, social event, social practice, and orders of discourse are introduced in such ways that grant redefinitions to discourse and discourse analysis as well as show why CDA is critical and how its constructing components (critical, discourse, and analysis) draw its meaning and contribute to form its aims and principles.
