Understanding Pottery Function

Understanding Pottery Function PDF Author: James M. Skibo
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461441994
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
The 1992 publication of Pottery Function brought together the ethnographic study of the Kalinga and developed a method and theory for how pottery was actually used. Since then, there have been considerable advances in understanding how pottery was actually used, particularly in the area of residue analysis, abrasion, and sooting/carbonization. At the 20th anniversary of the book, it is time to assess what has been done and learned. One of the concerns of those working in pottery analysis is that they are unsure how to “do” use-alteration analysis on their collection. Another common concern is understanding intended pottery function—the connections between technical choices and function. This book is designed to answer these questions using case studies from the author and his colleagues for applying use-alteration analysis to infer actual pottery function. The focus of Understanding Pottery Function is on how practicing archaeologists can infer function from their ceramic collection.

The Long Eighth Century

The Long Eighth Century PDF Author: Inge Lyse Hansen
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004473459
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 398

Book Description
The eighth century has not been analysed as a period of economic history since the 1930s, and is ripe for a comprehensive reassessment. The twelve papers in this book range over the whole of Europe and the Mediterranean from Denmark to Palestine, covering Francia, Italy and Byzantium on the way. They examine regional economies and associated political structures, that is to say the whole network of production, exchange, and social relations in each area. They offer both authoritative overviews of current work and new and original work. As a whole, they show how the eighth century was the first century when the post-Roman world can clearly be seen to have emerged, in the regional economies of each part of Europe.

The Settlement Patterns in the Jordan Valley in the Mid- to Late Islamic Period

The Settlement Patterns in the Jordan Valley in the Mid- to Late Islamic Period PDF Author: Jumʼa Mahmoud H. Kareem
Publisher: British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
A combination of historical research and fieldwork are used in this study of changing patterns of social and economic development in the Jordan Valley from AD1250 to AD1914. A historical framework and background information on the geology, geography and ecology of the region are supplemented by excavations at the site of Dhra' el-Khan and the results of archaeological survey by the eastern Jordan Valley Survey Project. Evidence of settlement patterns and occupation density, material culture and especially pottery and small find assemblages, are finally brought together in a historical overview of the period.
