The Mandates of the Church

The Mandates of the Church PDF Author: Rich Ayo Adekoya
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1504944747
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 97

Book Description
In this thought-provoking and momentous book, the author poses the questions, what is the role of the church in our society and should there be any relationship between the state and the church for the development of the society and what could be the effect of such collaboration if there is any? In asking on what bases is the church getting involved with the society, he explores both the Biblical foundations and three major theories that have emerged about societies and social behaviour. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between religion and social change to the case of the church in Lagos, Nigeria as an agent of social and political change in society. Using a thematic structure, Richard Adekoya illustrates different roles the church can play in society, especially in a democratic milieu, for example humanity services, educational development, spiritual and moral development and social and ethical development. He examines the various contributions of the churches in Nigeria right from the missionaries era to the contemporary dispensation. The book basically proved that the church mandate is not limited to its evangelical obligations. Its involvement in many aspects of peoples lives in society, particularly the social and political aspects, is part of its cultural mandate. This is a challenging book, rich in example and wide-ranging in scope: key ideas that so often appear impossible for the church to practice - employment generation, political leadership, public enlightenment, tackling corruption in the polity here practically seem possible. Richard Adekoyas excellent work, tackles this set of issues in a very thorough way. By looking at the issues through the lens of the Bible, church history and sociological analysis he makes a powerful theological case for the involvement of the church in the societies in which it finds itself called to give a witness. Understandably and helpfully there is a particular emphasis on Nigeria, a nation which he knows well. By choosing Nigeria as a kind of case history the broader, general case is given a particular and penetrating illustration that strengthens his wider argument. 'African Potentials' for Wildlife Conservation and Natural Resource Management

'African Potentials' for Wildlife Conservation and Natural Resource Management PDF Author: Toshio Meguro
Publisher: African Books Collective
ISBN: 9956552623
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 374

Book Description
This book focuses on two specific areas: wildlife conservation policies and projects, and the interaction between local societies and the surrounding environment in Africa. Against the internationally dominant approach that regards Africa as being a state of 'deficiency', this book demonstrates, based on fieldwork concerning various natural resources (e.g. wildlife, forests, fruit, fish and land) as well as many famous protected areas, that African people are collectively and actively trying to solve the environmental problems they are facing by strategically utilising both indigenous means and new extrinsic opportunities. Meanwhile, it also becomes clear that wildlife conservation still continues to cause local societies a multitude of problems, and the 'potentials' of local people and societies are existing but unnoticed and suppressed by powerful outsiders, and therefore, remaining informal and invisible.

Partnerships and Power Games

Partnerships and Power Games PDF Author: Lapologang Magole
Publisher: LIT Verlag Münster
ISBN: 3643906854
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
Volume four of the Defragmenting African Resource Management series is about partnerships and power games in natural resources management as stakeholders compete over environmental goods and services in the Okavango Delta. The Okavango Delta Management Plan development process-the main arena for negotiating stakes in and access to the Okavango Delta land and water resources-is a battlefield for partnerships and power games. In other natural resource management side events, mini platforms have been created and partnerships formed to negotiate stakes and claim authority and rights over resources. Those with political and economic power and knowledge stand a better chance to win power games, resulting in the 'survival of the most resourced.' This book suggests that the defragmentation of natural resource management through integration at all scales will spread resources and facilitate equity and benefit sharing.
